Mac is stuck in the "downloading additional drivers" phase of int rec

I unretired my early 2011 17" MacBook Pro (a1297) when I found this guide (https://gist.github.com/cdleon/d1eff7246...) which disables the defective dGPU.

It's a great chassis so I want to use it as a browsing machine.
It should be adequately fast so I maxed its RAM out (16GB) and installed a SSD (1TB), but getting Mac OS onto said SSD proved really hard (the workaround for the defective dGPU stops me from doing NVRAM SMC etc. resets).
Being so old I also couldn't create a USB installer, therefore I used internet recovery to install Mac OS but it is stuck at "downloading additional drivers" with 21 Minutes remaining.

What can I do?

You should be able to create a bootable USB or FireWire or even Thunderbolt drive. You are stuck on macOS Sierra until you get the system going.

So instead of trying to use internet recovery to your drive, just boot up under it to first format an external drive with GUID with a journaled file system. Once done download Sierra Sierra from here How to download macOS onto that drive, then follow this guide to convert it into a bootable image Create a bootable installer for macOS

Then you can boot up under it to do the install.

Now the rub!

I haven’t tried using the GitHub tool you have used I’ve been using a different tool gfxCardStatus. If you still have an issue you’ll need to use a different Mac system to setup the drive using a SATA to USB case.

I still have the original Lion install DVD.

The HDD is on 10.11.6 (El Capitan)

When I try to download the "install El Capitan" app I get an error message saying "you can't download 10.11 because you are on 10.11.6"

The GitHub tool moves the dGPU drivers out of its normal folder, this probably caused it to get stuck at the "installing additional drivers" stage, but without it doesn't work.

If I select a boot drive it goes to the apple logo then apple logo + spinning gear and then just a white screen.

Can I set gfxCardStatus up on the HDD so it works when the HDD is replaced with the SSD?

@simontt - How about making the jump to Sierra I think that will resolve the versioning issue you also appear to have hit.

While you can run gfxCardStatus on your booting drive (HDD) during the install the SSD needs to boot up.

I cheat! I just use a second Mac which has no issues to prep the drive fully using a case to hold it, then I just move it over.

@danj I am kinda reluctant to change the running system (HDD), it was unused/-able since 2017 when it worked for a short time after a dGPU replacement. Before that it was unused since 2014/15 when the dGPU broke, so there is some really old stuff on that HDD that I want to keep.

I can't really cheat, my Macs are all far to new, but my school has some old unibody Macs I might get access to.

what do you mean with the "SSD needs to boot up".

without the GitHub tool the Mac crashes while the apple logo + spinning gear is visible

with it the installation gets stuck at "installing additional drivers"

@simontt - there are basically two phases of the install the fist is the file part the other is the setup part. You are hitting a setup issue so the system switches over from one drive to the other. Here the HDD to the SSD.

to clarify one point you don’t need to alter your HDD, we are only using it to hold the installer to prep the new drive.

@danj so my 10.11.6 HDD can hold the (high) Sierra installer?
