Water damage has been fixed: Now my display has water spots.

I got this MacBook Pro a while ago which was water damaged by one of the previous owners years ago. I replaced the logic board, it now boots and works, however

the main problem that I’m having is the display having these spots.

I know that it probably is impossible to get all of these spots out, but even getting it marginally better would make a big difference.

Important note: The water damage on this machine happened 5 or so years ago, so there is most likely no water in the display still.

Hi tabbypears4,

Unfortunately, MacBook displays are a little too well sealed to be able to work on them for things like replacing the LCD, digitizer or backlight. Given the amount of time that's passed, you're absolutely correct in assuming it's not going to fix itself, nor is there really anything you can do to alleviate the problem.

The only practical solution is to replace the entire display assembly, which given the amount you've already spent on a logic board, is going to be a somewhat expensive fix; the replacement sold here on iFixit is over $500 USD. You can probably find one on eBay, but generally it's going to be difficult to find complete assemblies made by aftermarket companies on sites like Amazon and AliExpress.

You'll have to do a cost vs. value analysis; is it worth putting in the extra money to have a good looking display, or do you want to live with it the way it is? Ultimately the decision is yours, but we'll be happy to help out if you decide you'd like to take a shot at repairing it. iFixit has you covered with a guide to show you how if that's what you decide.

Alright. I’ll probably just sell it off or something since it’s not really an important device of mine and I have newer and better machines to replace it.

@tabbypears4 On the off chance that there is still residual moisture in the screen, you could try a little heat to see if any of it is affected. I wouldn't go any hotter than a hairdryer, but you might heat up the front of the screen and go around the edges and see if it makes any difference. I wouldn't advise putting it in an oven or using anything hotter like a heat gun, but a blow dryer shouldn't cause any permanent damage to the LCD. There's a small chance you could evaporate some of any liquid that might remain inside; remember I said they're pretty well sealed so it's not inconceivable that there's still some trapped and a little heat might alleviate the problem somewhat. Obviously you'll want to stop if you see any signs of discoloration of the display colors while you're doing that; that'll be an indication you've used too much heat. At this point you don't have much to lose by trying it.

@tabbypears4 If you're not looking for perfection, it appears you may be able to get a replacement display much cheaper than I had originally anticipated. There are used ones on Amazon and eBay that are approaching something more reasonable in terms of replacement cost that might be a viable approach.

On Amazon you can get one in "very good" condition for about $300 USD.

And there's one on eBay right now for about $100 USD with shipping.

At that price, it might be worth considering.
