My MacBook won’t power on after spilling a smoothie on it.

I had my MacBook Pro (2020 i5, 16gb 512gb) in my backpack, and spilt smoothie in it. I immediately realized, and took the MacBook out and put it in a position so gravity would hopefully drain it. The MacBook was still working and allowed me to shut it down.

I waited 5-6 days to try to power it on, but it would not power on. I thought I tried to reset the smc, nvram, etc and I think I did it correctly but nothing seemed to work.

I brought the computer to Apple, and they opened it up and found that some smoothie had entered the ports and dried up.

I then opened it up myself to get some photos. Please let me know your thoughts. Is it worth the clean out, or trying to repair? Or does it just seem completely fried?

If you are knowledgeable and comfortable working on and cleaning the motherboard and parts I would recommend trying to clean it. since you showed it in your pictures, the fans can be cleaned by disassembling them and using 90% isopropyl alcohol to remove the smoothie residue. you could also soak the fan blades themselves to remove the residue.

Since you shut it down right away and the smoothie was dried by the time you tried to power it back on, the electronics were probably not short-circuited so once cleaned they may still work.

Thanks for the input, I had experience working on Xbox motherboards, so I have some comfort but definitely nervous on a more expensive machine. I did buy a kit to open it up, and I bought a bottle of 91%

@fa1conx do you have any good insight for articles or YouTube videos, guides, etc. on good guides to do clean out the inside?

Sorry for the delayed response, I just found this video, didnt watch through the whole thing, but it seems to be a pretty in depth repair and cleaning of a similar model macbook that is water damaged. also a toothbrush or like alcohol soaked small rag should be good for cleaning it out, the board is pretty resilient so all you have to really worry about is making sure not to get any of the smoothie remains in the connectors, and also make sure not to knock any of the small capacitors and other components off the board.

@cjnichol - Sorry, this doesn’t look good. It will need some deep cleaning to see what is damaged underneath the spill from both sides. You may need to replace a few parts.

@danj thanks for the feedback Dan! So I’ll need to take apart the upper part. Are there any good YouTube guides for this? I have some experience with basic Xbox motherboards, but I have never messed with computer motherboards beyond a pc build

@cjnichol - Sorry I don’t know of any that would help you. I would use distilled water (not tap! As it will have salts and minerals) as this should clean up with it. Some people like using isopropyl alcohol, but you need to use 90% as the lower grades have other junk in it. Some folks use an ultrasonic with a water based cleaner. Which is what I often used, but you likely don’t have access to one the logic board would fit. I would just use a tooth brush with the water rinsing often. Then when you are done use the 90% isopropyl to give it a good rinse as it will also dry the board of the water, then let the parts dry on a warm window sill for a couple of hours.
