Is it possible to upgrade the CPU in the 22" 2011 BASE iMac i5 2.5ghz? I know it's possible to upgrade the top line 22", but I can't find anyone that has done it to the base model. I'm looking at going to the 65W i7 2600S since it has the same power requirements. Thanks!

It should be possible to upgrade the processor to the i7 one without any problem if the processor you want to use is physically the same format as the ones that Apple use. I don't know if Intel made many different formats or if they'll all just happily fit onto the logic board.
Just examine this photo and this iFixit guide and make sure that the processor looks the same. If it actually is the i7 processor that Apple uses, then you should have no problem whatsoever! :)

i3, i5 and i7 processors are of the same family and use the same socket, therefore they are interchangeable.
I did try to upgrade the cpu from an i5 2.5ghz 21.5" (stock base unit)
to a i7 2600 ... now my imac is broken gone .. i think the logic board
did not support the 95w instead of 65w power needed to fuel the i7 ...
anyone can be of help ? (maybe i broke some condenser that i can repair)
or i have to swap the logic board and that's it ?
please help me

Make sure the CPU you use is the Sandy Bridge i7 2600S. It must be the 65W version. If you use the 95W version the power supply likely will stop working and who knows what else...

Shkumbin - You have three issues here when looking at replacing a CPU: Is the current CPU have the same socket as the one you are thinking of using? Does the power supply to the CPU able to supply the needed power for the new CPU? Does the heat sink hardware transferable or is the new heat sink fit and offer the needed cooling? Here the issue was using the correct version of replacement CPU as Intel offered a low power version which was needed here (Apple's iMac power supply and cooling will not support the standard CPU chip). Review the CPU chips specs (currently used and the one you are looking at).
