I get a message not supported Core Storage config. Not sure what to do

Hi , Can you help me please I have the 2013 27” iMac with a Fusion Drive.

I have replaced the 3TB HDD with a 4TB SSD. Temp sensor all included.

When I try to set it back up I get the original macOS and finally now have Catalina but to set up and use I get a message not supported Core Storage config.

Not sure what to do can I just split the Fusion Drive and just use the SSD or do I buy a new HDD and keep the Fusion Drive what is possible I just need my comp to be reliable.

Dan- I know you have a lot of experience with this and I appreciate that. But my late 2013 iMac 27 has purred with the blade SSD still installed after removing the original failing HDD. As background, last year I replaced my failing 3TB Fusion Drive HDD with a 4TB SSD (same as the OP here). Afterward, I formatted the 128GB blade SSD with Disk Utility in APFS format. It mounts on the desktop beautifully and I've used it for many storage tasks since then. My point is that I see no reason to remove it.

As to the OP's error message, not sure on that one. My workflow though was a bit different. I migrated to my 4TB SSD BEFORE installing it in my Mac, using a USB 3.0 enclosure and a SuperDuper! restore to the SSD. So I had the opportunity to test and boot from the SSD before I ever installed it. Note that bootable clones were simpler back in Catalina days, but that is what the OP is running. My iMac is rock solid stable- currently running Monterey under OCLP, but that's a whole separate topic.

@kupe - The issue here is a bit different to what you dealt with.

Here the macOS version is getting in the way of the Catalina OS installer. As the installer sees the cache drive. We also have HFS+ conversion to APFS as the internet recovery installs what the system had OS-X 10.8.4 Mountain Lion if you didn’t use the proper Startup command

How to reinstall macOS

Note this line “ Option-Command-R during startup, you might be offered the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.” Apple often leaves you at the older often when you expected a newer OS!

Please see my reply to Dan, but the Fusion Drive is going to be split. No getting around that, but you don't care. Your new SSD is far faster and larger. In fact if you've already replaced the original HDD it already is. Take a look at my workflow in my reply to Dan. I formatted, migrated, and test booted my SSD before I ever installed it in my Mac by using a USB 3 enclosure and SuperDuper! But you could do the same with Carbon Copy Cloner or Time Machine. Like you, I was running a late 2013 iMac 27 with a 3TB Fusion Drive. I know Dan will disagree, but I found no reason to remove my 128GB blade SSD and in fact use it daily as just another Finder viewable disk.

The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs.

This series offers a PCIe 2.0 x2 interface which supports both AHCI and NVMe drives. The goal was into setup a dual drive configuration, the blade becomes the boot drive and hosts the Apps. The SATA drive is the data drive. Before COVID I was doing 3 to 4 systems a week for students in the fall as well as many pros thru the year.

These cache drives are just too small to be useful, and leaving them in is often a non-issue if reformatted first. That way the OS installer doesn’t try to set it up as a Fusion Drive.

Over the years Apple has altered how the installer sees the drive which is what we face with Catalina and newer OSs. Which is why it needs to be removed. Older OS releases required breaking the Fusion Drive but Apple killed that.
