Is this the end of my best friend?

I have been using a 160 gb Classic since Christmas since I upgraded from a 30gb. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the songs will either freeze as I'm selecting songs to play for about a min. or so, then skip to a different song, or as I'm listening to a playlist the song will just just stop (mid song) and jump to a different song... So I did the restore (menu and select) it worked for a while, but then a RED CIRCLE WITH X appeared and hasn't left since! I cannot put it in disk mode at all, so apparently hard drive is dead, according to info from forums about this issue. I just want to know, can I have the contents of my hard drive backed up or saved bc I do plan on buying a new ipod?? ( I had about 6,000+ songs :( but most of all, my beloved Joyce Meyer and Charles Stanley podcasts in which I listen to every morning before work) My feelings are terribly hurt, Can my hard drive be saved???

La Donna, those should still be in your iTunes restore folder. here is what Apple suggest"

Re-creating the iTunes Library file

Note: After re-creating your library, any devices that you sync with iTunes (Apple TV, iPod, iPhone, iPad) will see your iTunes library as a new library and will completely resync. The next sync with such a device will take longer and may reset some options since your rebuilt library isn't familiar to the device.

1. Quit iTunes.

2. Locate your iTunes folder (this is the folder that contains the iTunes Library and iTunes Library.xml files).

Operating System Default location of iTunes Folder

Mac OS X /Users/[your username]/Music

Microsoft Windows XP \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My MusicMicrosoft Windows Vista \Users\[your username]\MusicMicrosoft Windows 7 \Users\[your username]\My Music3. Open your iTunes folder.

4. Drag the "iTunes Library.xml" file to the Desktop. If the "iTunes Library.xml" file is not available, learn how to add files back to the Library (because the "iTunes Library.xml" file is not available, playlists and other information will not be available).

5. Drag the following file from your iTunes folder to the Trash:

Mac OS X "iTunes Library"

Microsoft Windows "iTunes Library.itl"

6. Open iTunes.

Important: Do not add any content into iTunes at this point (such as by purchasing something from the iTunes Store).

7. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.

8. Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file on the Desktop.

Mac users: Click Choose.

Windows users: Click Open.

If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, learn how to add them back into iTunes. from here. Of course this will only work if you backed it up. Otherwise there are very limited option of data recovery from your hard drive and most of them are costly. I also noticed in another post that you had ordered a new HDD ribbon cable, you might want to start with that. be careful with restoring anything else through iTunes right now, it may overwrite your previously saved files. Hope this helps, good luck..
