My 2DS XL won't power on

I recently homebrewed my 2DS and it was working perfectly fine. This morning while waiting for a call I try to turn it on. The light is blue for over a minute but the screens stay black. More time passes and I turn it off. I attempt to turn it on again, but a red light turns on next to the camera and then shuts off. Yes, the camera. The one you use to take selfies and draw over. Not the power button. The thing charges, or so I think. The LED next to the power button turns orange as it normally does.

I've scowered online and couldn't find an answer or fix. PLS help!! This little console was one of the only things to get little me through some tough times :(

Video attached. Try to ignore my nasal breathing 😔

I took out the SD card and the LED turned magenta. WTF.

Don't panic, this one should be an easy fix. The red light is boot9strap trying to tell you that boot.firm is corrupted on both your SD card and internal memory. Once you took the SD out, it couldn't find an SD firm at all, so the light switched to magenta. Here's what to do:

  1. Back up everything on your SD card, except boot.firm and boot.3dsx
  2. Format the SD
  3. Test the card with h2testw. If it passes, continue to step 4. If not, you'll need a new SD
  4. (Re)Download Luma3DS, copy boot.firm and boot.3dsx to the root of your SD card, then put the card back in the ds. It should boot now
  5. Turn the ds off again, then see if it boots without the SD inserted. If it does, copy your files back and you're good to go. Otherwise, continue to step 6
  6. If the console didn't boot in step 5, find the "gm9" and "luma" folders in your backup, then copy them to the SD card.
  7. Hold START while booting to open GodMode9, press HOME, and select Scripts > GM9Megascript > Scripts from Plailect's Guide > Setup Luma3DS to CTRNAND
  8. Press A to confirm. Once the script finishes, you can turn the console off, copy your files back to the SD and your DS will be back to normal

Feel free to ask if you have any questions. Good luck!

Hey there, having the same problem here, just checked the SD, no problems, and changed the boot.firm and boot.3dsx, and i get still the red notification led, what can I do now?

@miguelmateus okay, just to be sure, did you:

• Download a fresh copy of Luma3DS, not reuse the old one

• Check the sizes of both files. boot.firm should be 274KB and boot.3dsx should be 392KB

• Test the SD card immediately after formatting

• Make sure h2testw was testing the full capacity of your card

• Avoid using WinRaR (the 3ds doesn't like winrar)

If the answer to any of those is no, go back and try whichever ones you didn't. If you've checked off all those and it's still not working, try shining a light in the SD slot and look for any damaged or missing pins. (i'll admit i don't have high hopes with that one, since the red light means the system does see boot.firm on the sd, but it's corrupted.)

Hey, I was having a similar problem. I followed the steps to homebrew, and got to installation of boot9 and the reset. Now the 2ds does not turn on, shines the power light and a white notification light and turns off. I've quadruple checked that I have the luma files boot.3dsxl and boot.firm and reinstalled them three times. I've also moved all the files to another 32gb sd card and even back to the original 4gb sd card that came with the 2ds xl, all with no luck. I would love some help because I am at a loss!

I also used h2test and validrive to check the original sd card, both of which claimed it was working perfectly fine.

What is your DS model? New 2DS XL? Mine was, they apparently tend to have RAM problems, and as it is hardware, there is not much we can do about it. I couldn’t save mine…

Well, I don’t think you can go back. But don’t put the blame on urself, your console was already with the problem, trying to mod it just brought it to surface. It’s exactly what u said, and I believe the only solution is changing RAM and/or Motherboard, something about the hardware for sure
