My phone wont charge unless switched off.

Hi,

I have an Iphone 4, jail-broken running IOS 5.0.1.

It has been working (jailbroken) for some time without issue. While it is jail broken, I don't have anything installed outside of default stuff that RedSn0w puts on.

Suddenly, it refused to charge or connect to itunes. I have tried wall chargers, computer charger and multiple cables. All of these fail.

I have tried hard resets. I have tried putting it into DFU mode and connecting. This fails (so probably not software?). I have tried a IOS software update via wireless, which fails.

I can only charge my phone by connecting it to a charger and then switching the phone off. If I switch off then connect to a charger, the phone switches on and wont charge.

It is out of warranty (and jail broken) so taking to a apple store is not an option.

Has anybody got any ideas? if it is hardware, what are the likely culprits?

Probably the dock connector is the fault. Replacing it is not easy.

I would still recommend to take it to apple and pay a huge sum of money or just buy a new iphone.

Hi there It too easy to change.I got same problem for my i phone I bought part from online store and replaced by myself .Its work proerly again i phone 4 Dock connector under $20-$30 you can do your self . www.mobilepro.com.au

Hi, I had the same problem and tried many things but just fixed it so want to share it here for other people's benefit.

My problem: my iphone 5 won't charge or connect to itunes. The cable and connector is fine because it only charges when the phone is off. So it goes into a loop where it charges till 2% then the phone turns on automatically and then stops charging.

It does not respond when I plug it into my laptop for itunes.

I've tried the hard reset (holding home button and power button), but it doesn't reset the phone. The phone just turn off.

This problem persisted for a few days. I was able to recharge the phone by running it till the battery is empty and then plugging it in and leaving it overnight.

What worked:

Finally, I tried switching off the phone and plugging it to my laptop. itunes finally detected it and said it has a problem, recommending a software upgrade and restoring if the upgrade doesnt fix the problem.

But halfway through the process, the message said software upgrade failed but my iphone is able to charge and connect again.

So that's how it got fixed.

So try it if you have the same issue.

me too. My iphone 4s doesnt connect to the laptap.

Clean charger port first. If that fails replace dock connector.
