How can you disable the internal speakers with a hardware solution?

My aluminium unibody 2008 Macbook has two audio issues. First of all, the internal speakers are damaged, they are very silent and start distorting a lot as soon as I turn the volume higher. Optical out and headphones still work like a charm. The Apple service said I got to change the logic board. No, thanks, not for this cost... :)

The second issue is the common one, that the audio jack frequently jumps back to "Internal speaker", disrupting the sound via headphones. As I cannot use the internal speakers at all, I would like to disable them by some tricky soldering on the logic board. I want to be able to switch between Optical-Out and Headphones-Out.

Does anyone know how to do this? I could not find a explanation for the contacts of the audio jack on the logic board. Can anyone help how to do this? Thanks a lot in advance. Martin

I could now reach my goal by destroying the correct strip line on the logic board, sensing the current state of the audio jack. Now the macbook thinks I have an optical connection with the red light, even if nothing is connected. If I connect a analog jack (headphones) it switches to the headphone mode.

Perfect solution for me with my broken internal speakers. I even think with some fine soldering work, the original state could be restored. If this is useful to anyone, I'd be happy to send you a pic where you have to scratch to make this happen. All on your responsibility, of course.

Hello. No clue if you're still on this forum but I will give it a try. Yes I would like to do the same for the speaker on the right side of my Macbook Pro 2011. Any tips on how to find what I have to scratch/disconnect?

Disable internal speaker with the help of following steps:

1) Go to device management

2)From the view, option-click on show hidden devices. Now "Non-Plug and play drivers" will become visible.

3)Click on beep option.

4)From beep, properties click on the driver tab.

5)Select disable

This was the Unibody MacBook from 2008. Be aware, that this will disable any internal sound, not just one speaker. Hope you'll find the right spot on your Mac.

Disable the damaged internal speaker with the help of the following steps:

1. Go to System Preferences.

2. Go to Sound.

3. Click on Output.

4. Move the balance away from the damaged speaker.

The easiest way to disable the speakers is to simply disconnect then from the logic board. (Link provided) As to your second problem I would disable the internal speakers and see if I still had the problem. Good luck.

Disconnecting the speakers should work, but I will still have the second problem as I don't think Mac OS X will recognize that the speakers are missing and still jump from headphones to the non existing speakers. Or is there possibly a software solution for deinstalling the audio driver for the internal speakers?

You may also need a new set of headphones as the connector just don't fit quite right into the socket.

Look at an Apple set and look at yours note the total length as well as the detent (the thinner point just behind the tip). Some are slightly short or the detent shape or location is not quite right.

The socket has a switch which as others have pointed out does get damaged. If I remember correctly the switch closes to enable the internal speakers. In your case you may want to pull the logic bd out and solder a wire across the socket switch so the headphone socket is always active. Otherwise you'll need to replace out the logic board to get the socket working. If you can find a dead system for parts you might be able to swap out the socket.

The headphones or optical audio outputs are obviously enabled by a switch in the audio jack connecting the left channel (tip of the jack) to some other point. Opening this connection allows to permanently disable the internals while still having the choice of headphones or optical.

With it jumping back to the internal speaker, i believe there is a bad connection on the audio jack, either where it connects to the headphones, or where it is soldered on the board (or flex cable, however it is attached). Especially if you can wiggle it. Also with wanting to remove the built in speaker functionality, why dont you just remove the speakers all together. Desolder them? Should be fairly cut and dry....

Correct, it seems to be a bad connection. If I press the jack deep into the female connector, it works at first, but then gets loose and falls back to the faulty internal speakers. So desoldering the speakers will not help the bad connection.

With some of these units and past versions of the MBP, if you carefully use a paper clip stretched open and put it in the headphone jack and carefully use it to manually turn the part which senses if the sound is input or not it will sometimes clear the issue. It may have to be done more than once or it may not work but occasionally it does solve the problem.

Yes, I read this also, mostly for the stuck red (optical) light. I tried this already, but it does not help with my issue. Thanks anyways.
