My friend had one of the 1st generation ps3. It broke on him and sony said it had something to do with the lazer eye. I'm looking to replace the whole blu ray drive and not just the lazer eye like some of the guides i've found do. what is the best Blu ray player to use for it.

In order to replace the drive, you need to a. either stick with the same model you have and replace the BR board so that the console will continue to work, or b. you will have to get the tool released by http://www.elotrolado.net to get this accomplished. Personally, I'd stick with the same model and just reinstall the daughter board that belongs to your PS3. Check out how to do that on here Hope this helps, good luck.

Look for the model number. Should be were the serial number is in the back of the system. Make sure and verify the model before you buy a lens.
CECHA 01 - These were the first models, they need a 400A Lens.
You cannot use anything but a Sony PS 3 Bluray Lens.
Also you cannot change the whole drive. They are software locked to the PS 3, so you are better of just changing the lens only.
