Reuse the camera and microphone (iMac, Mid 2011, EMC 2429)
I got this fully functioning iMac for $80. Apparently it's too slow for anything. So I'm trying to convert it into an external display. And I want to reuse as many parts as possible. While waiting for the LCD panel control board, I decided to take a crack at the camera and microphone.
I came across this post that has a pinout of the camera. I soldered 4 wires to a USB connector and it seems to work but there are two extra wires (SMB_ALS_SCL & SMC_ALS_SDA) that are not connected. I thought they were for the microphone, integrated in the camera assembly. However, then I found a tiny device with 2 wires that looks like a microphone:
A quick search also verified that it is indeed the analog microphone (weird that Apple used an analog microphone).
Now, I guess I need to convert this analog microphone into a USB one. I am not well versed in analog electronics although I know what needs to be done (amplifying, ADC, sampling, sending PDM data to host). Does anyone have an existing solution that I can copy?
Also, the question now remains, what are the two unused wires (SMB_ALS_SCL & SMC_ALS_SDA) from the camera for?
Thanks.
