WiFi Connector Replacement in a MacBook Pro 17" 2009 Laptop Question

Hi,

I'm trying to replace the WiFi connector on my MacBook Pro 2009 motherboard, because I bent the pins on it accidentally during a routine check on the motherboard

I removed the connector, but now I've got ripped-pads that I'm trying to fix.

The situation is similar to the following (note not all of the pads shown are ripped, but some are):

I think that I understand all of the situations except for one:

The two pads circled are indeed ripped, so I'm going to need to fix them.

Does anyone know what this trace is doing? Is it a single connector going back to the same pin? It seems silly because why would the manufacturers bother if the pin goes nowhere?

@jamespeder48042 post a couple of well-focused pictures of where and how the lines are torn. I am pretty confident that we can guide you with applying jumpers to get your computers WiFi working again :-)

First off which end of the cable are we working with?

The one on the AirPort board which is within the lid or the end that connects to the logic board (J3401)?

Technically, this cable is called the camera cable not WiFi (don’t blame me I didn’t name it). It carries power to the AirPort board and camera as well as the digital signal to the AirPort board to be converted to either Bluetooth or WiFi signals as well as the camera data.

As for the pads, without comparing to a known good board you often can’t tell if there is a Via which is a hole that connects the two sides and even to inner layers within the PCB. You also have barrier lines within the connector which is chassis ground to lessen EMI emissions and they sometimes jump across in a daisy chain fashion.

So, don’t be too quick to dismiss the lines, but it’s also true some of these lines aren’t needed for the system to work. If you need to dig deeper into the given lines I recommend to grab a set of schematics and board-view drawings to review them. This will be needed so you can patch the lines to locations to carry the signal forward.
