Horizonal lines on screen when over 90 degrees, fixed in sharper angle

Hi all

Last night I was using my macbook pro, I closed the screen and when I came back and opened it some coloured horizontal lines started appearing everywhere on my screen. When I keep the screen in a less than 90 degree angle the issue goes away.

I'm quite sure it's a 'flexgate' issue as my model is one of the models with highest chance to have this issue. I have 2 questions

1) Is it ok to fix this by my own? I have the right tools and have replaced 2 phone batteries and a screen from a mobile phone so I have a little experience

2) I guess this is the part I need (MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Touch Bar, Late 2016-2017) Display Cable)? My backlight is working well without a problem, it's just the vertical coloured lines so I guess only the display cable needs to be replaced?

Update (02/18/25)

Hi there

Today I went for it and removed the screen to inspect the LCD cables.

As far as I can see there is no visible copper from wear, just the cables who show bending signs on the places where it bends.

I guess the paint won't help here as the insulation is ok, it's just the cable who is worn out due to the bending I guess? I was thinking to give it a try with some electrical insulation tape, what would you do?

Thanks again!

Replace the short flex cable that connects the display daughter board to the logic board. 이미지

Sadly, the cables you speak of are the LCD panel cables not the eDP cable which connects the logic board to the T-CON board (the part you’ve posted) that thin board hanging from the display as seen here in Step 28 MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar 2017 Display Assembly Replacement

As far as repairing the ribbon cables you can try cleaning them and the area of the grit which wears the insulation over the copper lines. You can try using some flexible paint to offer fresh protection from abrasion where it’s worn that might be enough.

The ribbon cables are not really replaceable as you think, it’s too easy to damage the LCD panel as the bonding of the ribbon to the glass is not easy and you do need deeper skills and tools than what I even have. That just leaves replacing the display assembly as the only option.

Aww, so basicly that means it can't be (easily) fixed unless I'm lucky and I can repair the current cable with the insulation paint. I just remembered when my MacBook was some months old I had exactly the same issue and got it fixed under warranty (they provided a new LCD screen).

However it has been 5-6 years since that repair I think I might just try to email them to address I'm having the same issue again? Was an official apple repair provider so worth the try I guess.

Thanks a lot for your help

Happy new year already

@bramlaekeman - Warranty repairs are manufactured supported. In this case you’re on the hook! I agree the design is not ideal more so where there is a lot of abrasive grit in the air often in very dry climates.

Update, went to the apple store which fixed my macbook screen previously. They tried replacing the eDP cable for free but the issue remained (as you foresaw). Only solution left is to replace the whole screen, which they price at 850 euros (lol). So I'm definitely not gonna do that.

I'll give it a try to 'fix' the current cable with some flexible paint as you described here, and if it doesn't work I'll be happy I did everything I could.

I've been looking online for flexible paint but don't really know which to take. Would you be so kind to give an exaple like on amazon or something? You'd be my hero

Thanks in advance

@bramlaekeman - Most paint is flexible, the real issue is the ability to adhere to the Polymide coating of the ribbon cable and it doesn’t flake off. I use a liquid rubber material and as it still a bit tacky I use talcum powder (real) to dust the area after the coating is dry using a cotton swab to apply the talcum powder burnishing it into the area so it slides smoothly.

@danj that's actually a very smart idea, will try that for sure. Will update you when it's done :)
