Battery Data Cable ZIF Connector Locking Flap broke!

I was replacing the battery for my MacBook and despite taking extreme care to apply minimal pressure, the locking flap on the ZIF connector connecting the battery data cable broke off. The ZIF connector was otherwise fine so I connected the battery and completed the repair. I am using the laptop now and things seem fine - do I need to open the laptop back up to repair it, and if so, what can I do?

I have had this happen once before and with the use of a microscope & tweezers I successfully managed to clip back in the connecting flap, they are very fragile and easily break as you know.... but if this has broken or is lost then the only real alternative to secure it fully again would be to replace the whole connector itself which would require a microscope and the necessary tools / equipment (Tweezers & a steady gentle hand) to position it properly. There is a video with a 'quick fix' for a Broken Missing Latch that provides a temporary solution. If you are able to take out the logic board yourself and take it to a local electronic repair shop they should be able to replace either the whole part or just the latch providing you can source the correct part for it for a small cost as it would take only a few minutes of their time, MUCH cheaper than if they had to diagnose any issue, take the unit apart, re-assemble etc.... or DIY and risk breaking the part again either by removing it from the new connector or when re-fitting it... Hope that helps, Good Luck!

You shouldn’t need to replace the entire connector only the latch from a new one I do if often enough.

@danj Yes it can 'easily' be done, but it's quite tricky especially if your not one with the patience or good with fiddling around with very fiddly things.... either way these are the 2 options.

@livfe - Don’t forget the needed tools and if someone is less experienced the added risk of taking the logic board out and then the possibility of damaging it desoldering the old connector and installing a new one. Much more work than even fumbling with a small piece of plastic which if you loose again is still cheaper and less risk.

@danj Did I not mention that about the tools etc and didn't Brandon already mention he has no experience in this in his comment? I was just trying to help out, maybe you can edit your answer to include everything he should know ;)

@livfe -I think what I wrote was clear “ you’ll need to order a new connector to then carefully pop off the latch and place it on your logic board connector.”

The latch presses the cable against the contacts, so while it may appear to work it’s not stable!

You’ll need to hunt down the latch as it like sprung off. Carefully look around where you were sitting as I’m sure you can find it otherwise you’ll need to order a new connector to then carefully pop off the latch and place it on your logic board connector.

Unfortunately I definitely do not have the latch anymore - I think it must've gotten thrown away during the cleanup. In any case I think it was broken – do you know how I might go about buying a piece to cannibalize? Sorry to be so clueless, never dealt with anything like this before...

@branchfreeman - Here’s one source Digikey - Six position connector Sadly, there is a minimum order requirement. Can you tell me where bouts you live? Country and nearest major city let me see if I can aim you to someone who has the part.

Thank you for all the help - I hugely appreciate it. Just to be clear, the piece that broke was on the small 6-pin connector for the battery data cable (I believe it's this piece? https://tinyurl.com/4rd7bhce ). Here's a reference photo from the iFixit guide I followed, where the spudger is pictured against the flap that broke: https://ibb.co/FgLg8vy

I was considering buying a few of these for $5 each on which to practice taking the flap on and off, and then finally using one of these flaps on the logic board's ZIF connector when I feel a bit more confident. Does that sound reasonable?

I appreciate all of your help, so thanks again so much - I'm located in NYC by the way, in case there's a supplier you recommend.

@branchfreeman - Just to be clear you didn’t break-off off the entire connector from the logic board, just the folding latch which compresses the ribbon cable from within the connector?

The link to the connector is what you will need in either case, but if you pull off the connector you may need a lot more work as the copper traces on the logic board might have been torn off! So there is nothing to solder the connector to. This will require patching the logic board with fine wires to reconnect things.

Yes! You maybe in luck, Louis Rossmann’s old shop was downtown on 184 1st Ave and now run by his old employee. Louis moved to Austin TX opening a shop there.

Bring your system in letting them know we sent you, if they aren’t too busy they may even fix it while you wait! Saving you the cost of all of those extras and getting back to work in no time!

@danj Yes that's right - just the folding latch!

Amazing, that's so helpful. Is this the place you're thinking of? https://maps.app.goo.gl/VQ6k9JsWKrgSA3qm...
