Keyboard and Trackpad are dead but power button still works?

Hello everyone I picked up a 2008 Macbook 2.4 A1181 with the last 4 of the serial number being DOP1. The keyboard and trackpad are dead. Power button still works however. I thought it was the topcase so I tried a known good working topcase that I had lying around. It was from a 2006 Macbook. After putting on the 2006 topcase it powers on the Macbook but the keyboard and trackpad are still dead. The Caps lock button will not come on. A usb mouse and keyboard work fine.

Is the connection on the logic board bad?

Thank you

Justin

If the computer is powering up fully from the 2006 keyboard, try using an external USB keyboard (any brand will do). Sounds like you may have liquid damage. Let us know how the external works and we can go from there. Do you get a good picture on the screen?

Mayer thank you for the quick response.

The external keyboard and mouse work fine. I took a look at the board and do not see any signs of corrosion or staining. The person I bought it from off of ebay said it did not suffer any liquid damage. He said it just quit working one day.

So far I have reinstalled Snow Leopard, Reset PRAM, and SMC. No luck. I googled the problem before I asked the question here and it seems most were solved by replacing the topcase.

Forgot picture looks great on the screen.

What are the part numbers on the 2006 board and the one on the 2008 board? I can't give you a price because I don't know which part has failed yet.

The topcase is not the issue I have figured out. The caps light will not come on either topcase. The 2006 topcase I know is good. So is there a pin on the connector on the motherboard that handles the power? Would replacing the connector on the logic board fix the issue? I also read that resoldering the south bridge might fix the issue? Does anyone on here do board work for a reasonable cost that is trustworthy?

Thank you

Justin do you live in the US? I do board level work. My online reputation speaks for itself. Do a Google on my user name. The southbridge should not be the problem, unless you are having issues with other USB devices/ports. It sounds like this may have experienced an exposure to liquid and the power MOSFETs have been compromised to the USB channel handling the mouse and keyboard. My contact info is in my profile.

Recently I refurbished a Macbook A1181 (version 4.1 , the one @2.4Ghz) and I had the same issue.

What I did was sticking a tiny little piece of a plastic sheet between the metal case and a little gold V-shaped connector that is spotted in the left side of the battery connector board (if you watch it from the pins side), to avoid contact between them. This worked for me.

Hope this helps.
