New front panel doesn't fit

Hello everyone,

I went through the iFixIt guide to replace the screen of my 4G iPod Touch and eventually I got a problem fitting the front panel.

All done perfectly and the iPod is working fine (screen, digitizer, buttons) but the top part is not fitting as it should be: it stands a little above the normal level (can't tell exactly how big it is; I guess I could stick the point of a toothpick there).

I removed the new adhesive of the top-left corner (it seems the problem is near that spot), I tried to first fit the top part instead of the bottom one, I rechecked the screws, I removed as much of the old adhesive as I could but nothing made any difference.

I tried to push harder in case that was the appropriate for the screen to fit but the distortion of the screen made me change my mind. Btw, the bottom part fits perfectly however I try to fit the panel.

So, what else should I try? Any suggestions on what may be blocking the screen in the top part of the device?

Are there any marks on the sides of it? could it have been dropped and the frame is slightly out? if so then you could get a pair of pliers and try to bend the frame back.

Thing is it only needs to be out about 1mm to cause a problem?

Good luck

I checked for any point in the top and side parts that may be damaged or of different height but I couldn't see anything strange. The only part I suspect is the area of the Wi-Fi at the top-left corner and that's because it's the only thing standing a little above the others. Though, I doubt it was any different the time I was openning the iPod :/

thanks for answering Paul!

Hi hfaistios,

Your problem might be the area where the Wifi-cable is stored (top left corner) or - what I suspect - the suspension bracket that does not hook into the notch.

Did you replace the LCD only or also the digitizer?

In case you replaced the entire LCD/digitizer-unit it is important that the suspension bracket on the old digitizer is also transferred onto and glued to the new screen/digitizer-unit (if it did not come with the unit). This bracket will hold down the upper part of the screen/digitizer-unit when rightly hooked into the notch of the upper ipod body/frame.

You might check this mechanical mounting.

I see. Yes, I changed both screen+digitizer. The thing is, I don't remember the bracket you are talking about. Where is it located in this image?

Hi hfaistios,

On your picture, it is the silver metal piece right under the brown ribbon cable (i.e. the cable/connection that you can only disconnect when you remove the motherboard) and under the LCD-connector. It is glued to and fixed ON THE LCD/DIGITIZER-UNIT.

Another way to describe its location: It is the part that sits on the screen/digitizer unit and girdles around the opening of the centered camera eye.

When you take a closer lock on that silver piece, you can actually see its three suspension brackets: one to the left of the camera opening (right under the brown ribbon cable); one at the level of the camera opening itself; and the third is on the very far right. These three brackets need to go into their corresponding notches found at the frame of the iPod.

I remember that when I ordered a new LCD/digitizer-unit, I had to remove this metal piece/suspension bracket from the broken unit and had to glue it to the new one, since the new unit did not come with this silver metal piece.

If not yet done, you need to glue this part very tightly onto the new unit, so that it will not move and cannot shift. Be careful that you fix it exactly at the place where it is suppose to be, as this will influence the later fit of the whole LCD/digitizer-unit.

The same happened to mine.Like he said fit it correctly into the notches.Always check if the screws are tightened.I have a question too.Are the digitizer and LCD sold separately?I am pretty sure the do but it is more common for them both together.Easier too.
