I was redoing the thermal paste, and when done, I reconnected the battery to the mother oard. There was a flash at the contact point. Now the computer will not turn on at all, no indicator lights, nothing. Same happens when battery is removed. Is my motherboard dead? Not including shipping, handling, taxes, or tariffs, a new mobo is looking to be $600-800.

A flash at a power contact point would indicate a high current draw likely due to a short circuit.
I'm affraid your thermal paste job was largely unsuccessful.
It might be possible to locate and remove the short and have it work, but the probability that components on the MB were damage is very high.
