Why does iBook battery crash OS at 48% but holds charge?

I bought a replacement battery for iBook 14" G4; it came out of the box charged to 54%; charged it to 100% so I could run it out to sleep and calibrate it; it crashed the iBook at 48% but held the charge. I can't calibrate it because I can't run it out. It did the same thing on our other 14" iBook.

Any suggestions?

Download Coconut battery: http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutba...

With this you can check out the specs on this battery. Something is suspicious here. See how many times it has cycled. Where did you get it?

Call the company you got the battery from and tell them that you paid for a new battery, not one that had been recharged 257 times. My Book is two years old and doesn't have that many charges on it and I use it everyday.

Go to this link and get one with a two year warranty. http://fastmac.com/laptop.php

By the way rdk is right and your battery probably has nothing to do with you crashing. Switch the batteries on the machines and see if you get the same results.

I put in my old battery and everything is working fine again - no crashing. I drained my old battery to 0 - it has a 299 load - and recharged it - I've been using it for the last couple hours and it's now down to 15% with no crashes (and draining it completely gained me 12% more charge on it - it was at 31% max and now it is 43% max) - the "new" battery is the only new part to this equation. I am returning the "new" battery for a refund.

You might consider not doing business with a seller that misrepresents their products. I'm glad you got a resolution. I've done business with Fastmac for about 16 years and have been very satisfied.

Hi! Has this happened multiple times? What gives you the indication that the battery is crashing your computer? What happens when your computer crashes? It would be VERY unusual for a battery to cause a problem that makes the computer crash. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen it happen. I bet it's just a fluke...I'd continue using the machine and see if it crashes again, and try to determine what the circumstances of the crash are.

FYI, battery calibration is fun and exciting and all, but it really isn't so important, so I wouldn't put a lot of emphasis on it. Another idea -- you can remove the battery entirely, and see if the computer keeps crashing.

They did represent the battery as new - I'm returning it tomorrow. Also, I've calibrated by old battery twice and increased it's charge max from 31% to 53% - so, it does help to do this. Hopefully I can get it even higher if I calibrate it every so often. And, the computer no longer crashes since I took out the "new" battery. It has to be the cause of the problem, especially since it crashed my husband's iBook, too. Thanks.

The thing is though, normal computer use tends to "calibrate" the battery the same way as what you've experienced...I don't know that specifically going through this procedure does anything above and beyond the normal charges/discharges associated with plain old regular use of the computer. Personally, I think it's sort of contradictory and self-defeating to spend your own time accommodating the "needs" of a battery, but to each his own.

To Mayer: Thanks for the coconut link; it says the battery has had 257 loadcycles. I'm not sure what that means.

To rdklinc: Thanks for the reply. Yes, it has happened many times and the computer has rarely crashed in the 3 years I've had it - and I said, it also crashed my husband's iBook, too. My laptop doesn't crash when it's on the adapter only - this only started happening two days ago when I put in the new battery. My old battery was weak, but this never happened. As for the calibration, that was just something I was doing because I just wanted to drain the battery and then re-charge it - I didn't get the chance because I can't get the battery to drain past 48%.

The company I bought it from will refund my money, but I still need a new battery....

257 loadcycles means the battery has been charged and discharged 257 times, which means it's not a new battery...hopefully it wasn't represented as new. If it was, then that alone is obviously reason enough to return it.
