My PowerBook freezes (I don't have the OS X Tiger CD)

Hi.

I have a PowerBook G4 12" with a 1.33 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM, that freezes one or two minutes after booting. I can't move the pointer or do anything and I have to shut it down pressing the Power Button. I'm not afraid of opening it because I've got nothing to lose on it.

I think it could be the Hard Drive, or the battery, but it does freeze when it doesn´t have battery, and it's plugged in.

And if the problem is the Hard Drive, how can I be sure of it?

(because I don't want to buy an HDD if I don't need it)

I don't know what could it be, but I've seen on the Internet one or two similar cases that couldn't be solved.

Thanks for the help (and sorry for my English, I'm from Spain).

Rodrigo

Do you have access to another Mac?

No, I don't have any other Mac. I'm reassembling it so I can run Applications->Utilities->DiskUtility:DiskFirstAid:verify disk as machead3 says and see what happens (I have to be very fast, because if I am slow it will freeze again).

Run Applications->Utilities->DiskUtility:DiskFirstAid:verify disk If there are problems with the HD it should be indicated there. Other possibility is dry thermal paste/dust causing overheating. If you can boot to your original, or Hardware Test CD (no matter the OS version) with no problems that too would point to the HD as the source of the freeze.

I can't run DiskUtility because I don't have the Mac Os X disc, but I booted in safe mode and everything went OK. Then I restarted and it freezed again (this time it took longer to happen).

Thanks for the help.

Rodrigo.

If you have an external drive you could clone your system to it from safe-boot, then boot from it to run DiskUtility:DiskFirstAid:Repair disk.

You have a system extension conflict if it starts in Safe Mode but not a standard start. Here's a free, little program to help you solve this issue: http://s.sudre.free.fr/Software/Diabloti...

To sucessfully run Disk Utilities as Machead wants you to do, the hard drive has to be able to dismount. This means running it from something other than the disk you want to check, ie a system DVD or in Target Mode. It won't be able to do it from the internal hard drive.
