Most likely you have 64 Megs on the motherboard and 64 megs in the slot. You can replace the slot with 1- 512MB SDRAM SODIMM for iBook G3.

I have my Graphite 466 upgraded as follows

160GB Samsung 7200 rpm hard drive

an extra 512mb of ram

Running OSX 10.4.11 very well.

Stripped the OS down with Monolingual and use TENFOURFOX as web browser.

Makes it a very useful tool ,and quicker than many expect.

If your ibook doent have firwire (my wifes tangerine doesnt) OSX 10.4 can still be loaded by using a great bit of programming called Xpostfacto.

When i first got my clamshell ,it was considered redundant , but they seem to have a core group of bodgers willing to make strides to get them to operate well above their limit.

Good luck.

+ Thanks for your report on this. Some people who haven't actually worked on these machines like to tell you like to tell you what the machine will and won't do.

According to Mactracker, the maximum OS is 10.3.9, you can have a maximum of 128 GB per drive, you can install an airport 802.11b card (if not already installed), and your maximum RAM is 576MB (a 512mb and a 64GB card would be what you need).

To further expand upon Mayer's solution, you won't actually be able to upgrade to 10.4 unless you pull some strings- you'll need to follow the instructions given here.

Won't be very safe either, could overheat

I'll trust you on that one. Plus, 10.4 would be so incredibly slow on that thing... 10.3.9 is slow as it is with the stock 128MB.

That too, that's why on very old machines I go by the n-1 rule, where n is the maximum os possible. Install the next up, and that'll be around the same feature-set/version, but faster/more reliable.

I have a tangerine that I run Ubuntu Edgy Eft on. It's fast and I don't overheat. I had an Indigo with the 466mhz processor, that I ran Tiger on and it ran slow and was always over heating. I replaced the hard drive with a Seagate 80gb and made 4 separate partitions. One of them ran 9.2, another ran Jaguar 10.2 and the other Minix, the 4th partition was setup as a Linux swap partition. I recommend either sticking with Mac OS 9.2, you can run Jaguar a lot better than Panther or Tiger, but it still lags a little and within an hour and a half you'll be overheating really bad. That was my recommendation if you want to stick with a Mac OS. I prefer running a Linux OS on older machine such as these. If you are a Linux novice I highly recommend Ubuntu Edgy Eft. If you have a higher skill level, Yellow Dog and Minix are awesome. It takes some real Linux experience to even get these installed. Gentoo which is a great distro also makes a PPC version of their OS. I haven't tried it out yet but am looking forward to it. As far as Linux formatting is concerned the easiest way is two partitions, well 2 are required, you have to have a Linux-swap partition which I recommend you make anywhere from 2gb to 4gb depending on the size of your HD. Your main Linux partition should be formatted to ext2, ext3, ext4. Runnin Ubuntu Edgy Eft on this machine takes up very little hard drive space, doesn't require much RAM and is super fast. You can't go wrong!
