Background and Identification
In the simplest terms, external storage refers to the storage devices outside of a computer. External storage devices are generally hard drive disks that can store massive amounts of data, and can come in the form of hard drives or as small as USB drives.
Western Digital is one of the leading companies in external storage devices, especially in the consumer electronics market. The external storage devices in the consumer space are divided into four product lines: MyPassport, My Book, WD TV, and My Cloud. Western Digital also color codes the case of the external hard drive for various uses. The following explains the meaning of each color:
- Black: high-performance
- Blue: general desktop purpose
- Red: network-attached storage drives
- Purple: surveillance drives
- Green: eco-friendly
- Gold: data-center drives
