In this guide, you will learn how to fix the ignition switch of your Chevrolet Cavalier (1988-1994). You will need two tools in order to complete the replacement. The links for these can be found below under “Tools.” It is also necessary to purchase a new ignition switch which link can be found under “Parts.” This repair should fix any issues you may be having with an ignition switch (car not turning on, stuck keys, etc.). Please keep in mind that this repair can only be made on models that do not contain an airbag behind the steering wheel.

Before beginning, ensure that your model does not contain an airbag behind the steering wheel. Then, disconnect your car battery.

Pull off your horn button and locate the horn wire. Once found, twist the plastic keeper to remove.

Using a flat head screwdriver, test the new switch. Do so by reconnecting the battery and turning the switch in either direction. The switch should turn smoothly and only kick back to the on position. After testing, disconnect the battery again. Take note of the tab on the case of the switch.
