Change the oil in your Accord and keep the engine running strong. This procedure is correct for all 1998-2002 Accord models equipped with the 2.3L inline 4-cylinder engine.

-
Place a jack on the round portion of the front subframe on the driver side of the car, just inside the wheel and just outside of the front sway bar bushing.
-
Raise the car until you have enough room to work comfortably underneath it.
-
Place a jack stand under the front jacking location, the reinforced metal part of the vertical crossbeam, and lower the car onto the jack stand. Remove the jack from under the car.
-
-
-
Use a box end wrench to loosen the 17 mm hex oil drain plug located at the back of the oil pan, facing the rear of the car. Only use the wrench for about a half turn.
-
Position an oil drain pan underneath the drain plug and loosen the drain plug by hand until it is free and oil begins to flow out of the oil pan.
-
-
-
The engine oil filter is located on the back of the engine, almost directly above the drain plug.
-
Move the oil drain pan so that it is underneath the oil filter.
-
Unscrew the oil filter by turning it counterclockwise until it comes free of the threads on the engine. Remove the filter with the open end facing up (it still has oil in it), and then place it face down into the oil drain pan.
-
-
-
-
Make sure you are wearing clean gloves, then dip your finger into the new oil and evenly rub a thin layer of oil around the rubber gasket of the new oil filter.
-
Use a clean rag or towel to wipe down the oil filter threads and contact area on the engine.
-
Use your hand to screw the new filter back into place over the oil filter threads. Hand-tighten it until it is snug.
-
Remove the oil drain pan and any other tools from underneath the car.
-
-
-
Locate and remove the orange-ringed dipstick.
-
Wipe down the dipstick with a rag or towel to remove oil and ensure a valid reading.
-
Reinsert the dipstick all the way, then remove it.
-
Oil should cover the end of the dipstick, up to the second hole. The top hole is the maximum oil level, and the bottom is the minimum.
-
-
-
Allow 12-24 hours for all of the oil to drain out of the old oil filter.
-
Take your old oil and filter to a recycling facility. Most auto parts stores and repair shops accept these at no charge to you. In addition, some cities and/or counties have a service where they will collect used oil and filters from your home. For more information, see the American Petroleum Institute's web page on used motor oil collection and recycling.
You should use the oil viscosity stated on the oil filler cap and/owner's manual. My 2002 Accord coupe with 2.3L engine states 5w20 not 5w30. The car is a California car (CARB & ULEV may account for the difference).
Good day, pls my car is 2001 Honda Accord, I put 5w20, synthetic oil as stated in the manual but after driving it for 680miles, the oil indicator started blinking. Then after checking the oil level with the dipstick, it was dry.pls what could be the cause?
I'm in Nigeria, so the temperature is high here. Then when I could find the 5w20 at the location where the blinking started, I put 20w50 that I found. Now my car is smoking. Pls what should I do
O.M.G. You should NOT have done that as I'm sure that you have already guessed or come to the conclusoon. You stated 1st that your problem was you accord was not registering.any of the 5w-20 oil that you had put in to it after driving approx something near 600 miles ago per your vehicles' manuals' recommendation.
You should have thought to yourself hmm I don't have anything on my oil dip stick thats strange, could I really have zero oil inside my cars engine? That would be bsd, what could cause my oil to be empty wen I know I filledt up ? Maybe I should inspect underneath my cars for fluid on the ground that could be oil, then I should probably check the engine bay for anywhere oil could have leaked from like the oil lines, the oil pan,, the pans drain plug, the oil filter, etc.
If you can't find any leak, try pouring a little oil in you motor and waiting until it finds the hole for you and leaks out. It could take awhile as it slowly coata all of your engines many ---- continued in my next comment =>
If your car is blowing smoke out that could be manymany different things my poor friend. I'll just keep this coen short and say that if the smoke 8s white and sort of blue in color and if its like really bellowing out when you accelerate that would be a sign that you are yes, you probably did not guess it on your own. Burning OIL!
Yay! Right?? More oil problems... though honestly it's probably the same oil problem that you didn't handle correctly the first go around so now you just have a larger problem revolving around the same initial oil problem... cheers!

Thanks for the clear instructions...I spent more money on the oil change than if I had let a mechanic do it but he wouldn't have used Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil and a Bosch Oil Filter either. The guy at the auto parts store said "nobody uses plug gaskets anymore"...I said, I do....that's what iFixit says." Thanks again
Can i use 5w30 synthetic in my f23a1 ?? Is it beter , because i use 10w30 just normal and i put almost 1quart per week in it :$
According to car owner manual for 2002 accord ex2.3ltr oil is suppose to be 5w20.you suggest 5w30.live in upper Midwest so cold winters, is the difference ok? How about synthetic, good, bad, or. ..?
Do what your car's owners manual says. Every recommendation your owners manual has its what your car needs. Every fluid is different on every car, so read your owners manual.
2001 Honda accord six-cylinder should you use 520 or 530 in Pennsylvania
Drain plug is 13MM.
Depends... Factory Honda plugs are 17mm some replacement plugs are 13mm or 17mm

do you turn anticlockwise for removing the drain plug..for 2000 honda accord 4 cyclinder sedan
Yes Krishna Kumar counter-clockwise (anti)
Excellent instructions. Please add: using a jack stand on the passenger side will help significantly.
Please can I use 5w30 for f23z5 VTEC Honda engine in a tropical hot region?
I displace 5W30 with 1 quart of Marvel Mystery oil in winter. My 2000 2.3 Honda oil cap calls out 5W30 of which I use synthetic (Walmart brand).
In the 2000 honda accord se 4 cylinder model says to add to add 4.5 US qts?

On my 2000 Accord the filter is on passenger side so I lift that side for my access. Also fill w/about 4 1/2 qts, after driving around the block, check & top off oil as needed (there's no easy way to remove excess oil). You may have a little to spare for later. Rip open a (cereal) box to place under oil pan/filter area to catch spilled oil drops.
I have to constantly keep adding oil. The street where i usually park my car is way more darker than rhe rest of the street it has a leak for sure. Its not the plug gasket im sure of it cuz i recently bought a brand new oil pan for my car which came with the proper plug for it. So it has to be that the threads are stripped on one of the locations where the screws that hold up tge pan are. Am i making any sense or am i just floating away into the sky here.
If no jack stands can I use tires on its side?
