If you still experience the error, you can follow this guide to disassemble the camera and manually clean the inside of the camera and the lens.

Remove the two small screws on the bottom of the camera using a Phillips #00 screwdriver.

Use a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the two small screws on the right side of the camera.

Use a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the screw on the left of the camera under the A/V out digital label.

Use a Phillips #00 screwdriver to remove the screw on the bottom of the camera near the battery and memory card slots.
This screw will be longer than the rest of the screws.

Clean the lens and the area surrounding the lens with a soft brush and dust blower.
Tweezers can be helpful when removing sand.
Reassemble the camera and if the E18 error persists, further disassembly of the camera may be required.
