Old bungee cords tend to dry out and become brittle. This makes it easier for them to snap when tensioned, rendering them ineffective when attempting to secure gear like paddles or backpacks to the kayak.
A bungee cord should be elastic, tight enough to secure gear but also easy enough to pull these items out as needed. Take your time to adjust to this desired tension in Step 5 of the guide.
While the specific pattern of your bungee across the vessel might differ slightly, this guide will help you replace the cord.

Identify the attachment points where the bungee cord is connected. These are usually eyelets, D-rings, or hooks.

Lay the new bungee cord alongside the old one.

Use scissors or a knife to cut the cord to the required length.

Push the cord through either of the attachment points closest to the middle of the kayak.

Tie a simple overhand knot to secure the cord on this end.

Thread the cord through the opposite attachment point and then to the next point on the opposite end and repeat - Creating a criss-cross pattern as you thread away from the center of the kayak.

Gently pull on the new bungee cord to make sure it is securely attached and provides the desired tension.

Once you are satisfied with the placement and tension of the new bungee cord, tie another overhand knot to secure the bungee on this end of the kayak.
