    • Three 14.4 mm Phillips #00 screws

    • Three 3.5 mm Phillips #00 screws

    • Four 3.5 mm shouldered Phillips #00 screws

    • When replacing the small screws, align them perpendicular to the slight curvature of the case (they don't go straight down).

How much weight can I save by removing the optical drive?

    gunes314 - 답글

You can save a lot of weight if lets say your installing a solid state drive or putting in a second hard drive but if you know that you use the CD/DVD disc drive a lot then you might just want to leave the drive alone.

Tip: Use one of those weekday pill holders to have a cheep way to store screws you remove and each day of the week can be for different sizes or parts. It has been handy to have (much less expensive than the magnetic mat.

Hello, where can I buy the screws I need in case I lose one of them?

    taylornya - 답글

I have one stripped screw... How opening without drill it?! Any suggestions please?

    rodrigosady - 답글

I also stripped a couple screws. I wasn’t able to open it up without drilling. After drilling the heads and removing the cover it was easy to hacksaw the tip and unscrew with a standard driver.

    Michael Wilkens -

My top tip - make sure you buy good quality Phillips screwdrivers and a magnetic holder. Cheap screwdrivers won’t get the screws undone safely. Without a magnetic holder you have no chance of getting the tiny crews in and out safely.

    jeremyyoung - 답글

A good Phillips 00 is your friend here. Also, when reinserting the screws, gently start anticlockwise and you wil feel a click at the start of the thread. This tells you you’re in the right place and less likely to cross-thread through force in the wrong place.

Before ordering a new Trackpad remove the existing battery and try clicking the Trackpad. If it clicks OK with the battery out the source of problem is likely a swollen battery, which should to be replaced even if it still works to some degree. From the side of the battery you will likely see the soft part of the battery bulging beyond the hard case.

    Patrick Langvardt - 답글

That’s absolutely correct as I can testify. With the battery removed I also adjusted the T6 set screw that adjusts the sensitivity of the trackpad click, evidently someone had cranked mine down tighter than the factory setting.

    • Use the edge of a spudger to pry the battery connector upwards from its socket on the logic board.

    • It is useful to pry upward on both short sides of the connector to "walk" it out of its socket. Be careful with the corners of the connectors, they can be easily broken off.

Is this step of removing the battery connector required?

    manodh - 답글

yes - as with disassembly of any electronic component you have to remove any power source. You don't want to accidentally turn the Mac on

    khull -

Prying the battery connector off does not take much force. I did exactly what the guide suggested (walked it off back and forth) with the spudger without any problems. Just be very gentle, much like with anything inside laptops, they are very fragile and need to be worked with carefully. A+ instructions, battery replacement was a success.

One other note: The screw heads fit flush with the curvature of the case -- which means that they aren't exactly horizontal. In other words, they aren't perpendicular to the table that the computer is resting on. Don't try to force them straight in vertically, because you'll risk cross-threading them. (nearly ruined one screw hole myself!)

Does the MacBook Pro 13“ (mid 2012) accept a bundle of 2x 8GB RAM to make it run with 16GB? Because the Apple Support page says „maximum 8GB“. Does that only mean the standard configuration, or does it mean the mainboard can only handle 8GB (2x4GB) not 16 GB (2x 8GB)?

Do you have an answer for this? I have 8GB originally and would love to upgrade.

Michael Chandler -

Could you please specify the memory chip that you bought? I need more details in order to get the right one, thanks!

Lin -

Any memory kit that is either validated by Apple or that has the proper channel configuration (9-9-9-24) is okay to use. If you are looking for pure performance RAM, a kit of Corsair Vengeance RAM is okay to use (again, check the channel configuration), but most people will benefit from a kit of Corsair Mac Memory or the kit that iFixit provides in the volume of your choice.

7 December 2015: Successfully used this guide on my new BTO Mid 2012 i7 13" - really nice to have this tutorial up on my iMac while I did this - nice to "check off" the steps.

I remembered from somewhere that one at least used to have to reset the PRAM/SMC, but, it recognized the new RAM amount of 16 glorious GB with no problem.

I think disconnecting the battery had the same effect, as the Date reverted not quite to 1969 - that also updated with no problem.

Thanks!

My mid-2012 13” says it has 4GB RAM and I want to upgrade to 8GB. Do I need to get 2 X 4GB or just 1 X 8GB? If I get just 1 X 8GB can I leave the old RAM in the 2nd slot?

Mark Chandler - 답글

Either 2 X 4GB or 1 X 8GB will work, but not one of each. Whenever you install multiple RAM sticks in a machine they should be exactly the same manufacturer and model. So if you wanted to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB you should either buy another identical 4GB stick and install it alongside the original, or remove the original and buy either two new 4GB sticks or one 8GB stick. Either choice will effectively provide the same result. Hope this helps!

Sam Omiotek -

Sam Omiotek seems to be wrong here. You can mix ram. It’s not the most performance or optimal way, but that’s it. You can do it.

Buying 2 identical RAM dices will give you up to 15% speed boost for apps that need all of it - music/video/graphic design.

You can buy 1x8GB and replace one of the older rams in your machine for a total of 2+8 ram and it will work just fine.

For many people it is worth cleaning out the muck & “belly button” fluff from the fan while you are in there. Adds on another 10 mins to the job and does wonders for the cooling system. Cheaper to clean the fan than to replace burned out boards etc

Well, it’s 2019 and I just did this to my old 2012. It was quite easy. Reading comments I realized the main concern regarding disconnecting the battery is to avoid frying the motherboard by accidentally touching areas with something conductive and I agree.

The first re-boot showed only one bay in use and I had to check and found out I didn’t push the top memory card hard enough but once I fix this hiccup and re-booted again I saw the new 16gb and my loving MacBook Pro comes to life so fast!

I just upgraded my RAM from 4GB to 16, and I don’t even recognize this computer. The difference in performance is so off the charts it’s like having a new computer. I’d intentionally gone for an older model because there certain components I needed to work remotely, and had been really regretting my decision. Now the only thing I’m upset about is how long I waited. Thank you for the clear and detailed guide on how to do this.

Clemens Weileder - 답글

I can’t be certain but it could be coil whine. See if it sounds like this. If it is in fact coil whine the best you can do is reinstall the RAM and see if that fixes it. If not, request a replacement from customer service and see if that fixes it. Good luck!

2021 Jan. 30: I just installed 2 x 8GB RAM (16GB total) in my 13” mid-2012 MacBook Pro (“MBP”), to replace the 2 x 2GB RAM that came in it. An apple tech (“Advisor”) told me that his tech notes at Apple say that my MBP does support 16GB RAM, and after a few minutes of testing with the new RAM, the MBP works significantly faster (from a little bit, to lots, depending on the app or function) :-)

I bought the 2 new 8GB RAM modules/”sticks” that I installed from Best Buy, and they are PNY brand, model #MN8GSD31600LV (DDR3, 1600MHz, 1.35V, CAS 11), at $40 each ($80 + tax, total).

Dear Madam, dear Sir, I followed the apple tutorial to change the ram of my early2011 Macbookpro.Unlike in iFixit tuto, it is not specified to disconnect the battery prior RAM removal/installation. Now the machine does not start, even if I replace the old ram.

Mac does not react anymore, magsafe is not even recognised

I already tried the SMC reset using shift+ctrl+option + power 10s , unfortunately it did not work.

Is there any trick?

I had to proceed to dust removal, do you believe I generated some shortcuts somewhere or the fact that I removed the ram without disconnecting battery is the main issue?

Pierre Panine - 답글

I solved the issue: Opened again the mac. Disconnected the battery. connected the magsafe charger. restart mac. close the mac without stop it. wait the fan stop. reconnect the battery. Connect the magsafe, now it works back as before

Pierre Panine -

We’re glad it works! In the future, we recommend following our guides. We always instruct to disconnect the battery as soon as possible during upgrades or repairs to prevent damage.

Does anyone know if it is required to be DDR3L? Or will DDR3 work as well?

It’s my understanding that the “L” denotes that it is a lower voltage variant, but I wasn’t sure if that was a deal breaker or not as I have 2x4GB DDR3 modules from another system that I would like to use instead of buying new (if possible).

I'm not a tech-savvy person in the slightest, but my other laptop has to go into for repairs next week, and it will take 2 weeks, so I need a computer. This literally took 5 minutes and was so easy.

I replace my Mid-2012 macbook pro's 4 GB with 16 GB, its a 10 year old laptop and I have restored it to factory settings, so it's got nothing on it anymore. But now it doesn't just pinwheel every time I try to open google chrome or excel at the same time.

Just make sure that before closing the lower case, reconnect the battery, I mean you'll figure it out pretty quickly, but you unscrewing and re-screwing all those screws is a little annoying, not like I know first hand or anything.....
