  1. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Introduction: 1 단계, 이미지 1/1
    • The most common problem with the Nintendo DS Lite is a broken latch. You can buy a new shell for under $10 directly from China (2017 prices).

  2. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the battery: 2 단계, 이미지 1/3 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the battery: 2 단계, 이미지 2/3 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the battery: 2 단계, 이미지 3/3
    • Unscrew the battery case with a PH000 bit. You will probably need to pry open the battery case as the cover becomes sticky with age. The battery compartment is often quite tight so you might need to gently pry out the battery with the plastic spudger.

  3. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the rubber feet: 3 단계, 이미지 1/3 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the rubber feet: 3 단계, 이미지 2/3 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the rubber feet: 3 단계, 이미지 3/3
    • Quite commonly I see this part of the DS Lite damaged. Follow these steps to remove the feet without damaging anything.

  4. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove screws: 4 단계, 이미지 1/1
    • Now remove the two gold colored screws under the rubber feet and the two silver colored screws in the battery compartment with the PH000 bit. Then remove the three silver screws and the small black screw with the Y00 bit. Set the Y00 bit aside as you are done using it.

If you get an essential starter tool kit then the Y000 bit is to small for the Y00 however if you plan on getting more bits you can file down the Y000 bit and it works perfect.

  5. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the bottom cover: 5 단계, 이미지 1/2 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the bottom cover: 5 단계, 이미지 2/2
    • I see a lot of damage caused by carelessly removing the bottom cover, so take your time and carefully move the plastic spudger around the perimeter. If the bottom cover seems glued on, remove the cover with the unit closed. This may help prevent scratching the digitizer.

  6. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the shoulder buttons: 6 단계, 이미지 1/2 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the shoulder buttons: 6 단계, 이미지 2/2
    • Carefully grasp and remove the shoulder buttons. Try to hold the spring assembly together so that you don't lose any pieces. The spring wire can puncture your skin so exercise caution. Wear safety glasses to avoid any rogue springs!

It's recommended to hold the springs with tweezers to protect your hands, because the springs have really sharps edges that can easily puncture your fingers.

  7. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the Wi-Fi daughterboard: 7 단계, 이미지 1/2 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the Wi-Fi daughterboard: 7 단계, 이미지 2/2
    • You must remove the Wi-Fi daughterboard at this stage or you risk damaging the digitizer. I learned this the hard way. You will need to pull hard on the daughterboard as the adhesive is very strong. You can try using heat or alcohol could to loosen the daughterboard, but that could risk damage to the components and I've never needed to do it.

What do you mean by "Damage the digitizer"? Is it required to be removed first electrically somehow? Could you please be more specific?

    Daniel Myers - 답글

Based on the next step, they probably mean pulling it out too harshly could cause damage to the connector right above it (and the digitizer's ribbon cable)

    elwood -

No matter what I do or use, the doughterboard is not coming off. It can be detached from its slot, but its glued extremely hard to the board

  8. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Lift the digitizer flex connector: 8 단계, 이미지 1/2 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Lift the digitizer flex connector: 8 단계, 이미지 2/2
    • Gently lift the digitizer flex connector from this side with a small flathead bit. Take your time and be gentle as this connector is easily broken. Replacing the digitizer is an extremely common repair for this console so I highly recommend learning how to do this.

How do you safely get the cord back in on reassembly

    Aaron Rueppel - 답글

RE: I answered my own question. It’s easiest when the motherboard is screwed back in. Use a plastic needle nose tool to lift the cord out from under the motherboard if it gets trapped. Then face the gameboy end of the device away from you. Make sure the plastic tab is perpendicular to the board. I used the same tool from earlier to adjust the cords height while I nudged it back into the slot. Hope this helps someone that got stuck in the same way.

    Aaron Rueppel -

Step 17 below has the routing of the white wire.

    John Gotts - 답글

you said you broke 3 of these tabs for the flex, where could I get a replacement?

juan pablo valencia toro - 답글

I found the connector. Look for "NDSL touch screen ribbon port socket" on Ali Express. At the time of this writing,10 pieces for $4.01 with $2 shipping to the US. Make sure you buy at least a handful, and it helps to use a digital microscope.

    John Gotts -

What is actually being removed here? Is it the small black piece? That seems too be soldered in, though.

    Brody - 답글

I'm gently lifting the small black or dark colored plastic clip. Not removing the lower display module---yet!

  9. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove this screw: 9 단계, 이미지 1/1
    • Remove the final screw holding down the motherboard.

  10. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Flip the motheboard around: 10 단계, 이미지 1/3 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Flip the motheboard around: 10 단계, 이미지 2/3 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Flip the motheboard around: 10 단계, 이미지 3/3
    • Flip the motherboard around as shown. Be gentle as the flex cable is fragile. Note the Chinese writing on the console made at the Nintendo factory.

  11. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the flex cable: 11 단계, 이미지 1/1
    • Remove the flex cable with your fingernail. Do not use a flathead bit, as it may damage the connector. Sorry about the blurry picture, but this step will be obvious if you've been following along with a real unit. See the previous step for a clearer picture.

The flat end of the Halberd Spudger is good for this.

    Matthew Young - 답글

For such a critical step this is quite an awful picture… I have no idea what you’re lifting up/sliding

    Marcus Kirkwood - 답글

Hi, Marcus, you're no doubt looking at this picture in isolation. If you had a console in front of you it would be more obvious: Use your fingernail to lift the ZIF locking tab. I recommend that you don't use a metal tool for this, but a high quality plastic spudger might work. The iFixit spudger is too thick for this.

    John Gotts - 답글

Well this was akward. I managed to pull the entire connector from the motherboard. I won't even try to solder this. Where can I get a replacement? EBay?

    phnome - 답글

Before buying a new connector, i'm worried about your motherboard because if you have ripped out the entire connector of it, there is a very high chance that you had ripped out some soldering pads with it, making repair the console much more complicated.

  12. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove black wire: 12 단계, 이미지 1/1
    • Remove this black wire. You will have to wiggle it out. One of the stupidest design decisions on the DS Lite besides the latch problem, the black wire is even harder to put back in. Do not attempt to mess with the DS cartridge port in any way. With persistence, the black wire will come out and it will go back in when the time comes.

I tied a piece of small ribbon around the black wire and pulled it through when I removed it so that I could pull it back when I’m done

    Jcates2323 - 답글

Hey, I’m 14 and have been doing this for around two years and I’ve fixed and resold around 15 Nintendo ds lites but I keep forgetting what the black wire is called and the purpose of it is, could you tell me?

    Michael Laten - 답글

Hi, this cable connects the Wi-Fi module of the console to its antenna and it is called "Wi-Fi antenna", because the other part of the cable is soldered directly to the antenna

  13. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove white wire, digitizer flex: 13 단계, 이미지 1/1
    • Make note of how the white wire is routed. You will need to replicate this routing for the reassembly. Now remove the white wire. Make sure that the digitizer flex cable was detached earlier. If not, go back and perform this step.

Do not remove the digitizer cable. Its a &&^&^$^ nightmare to reinstall and is completely unnecessary when doing a case swap. I’m basically having to replace the console due to following this step'.

    Daniel Camburn - 답글

Definitely do be careful. The digitizer is almost always worn out on the DS Lite, though, and it is a common repair. See step 8 for the recommended way to lift the locking tab using a small flathead bit.

    John Gotts - 답글

  14. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the lower display: 14 단계, 이미지 1/1
    • Remove the lower display flex connector. Pry the clip up with your fingernail, as you did with the upper display.

  15. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove button assemblies: 15 단계, 이미지 1/2 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove button assemblies: 15 단계, 이미지 2/2
    • Remove the rubber and plastic button assemblies. This step is pretty easy, but don't lose any pieces. Every plastic and rubber piece can immediately go into hot, soapy water. Replace any rubber piece that is torn or excessively damaged.

  16. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Disassemble the latch: 16 단계, 이미지 1/2 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Disassemble the latch: 16 단계, 이미지 2/2
    • This is the chief design flaw of the Nintendo DS Lite. The latch assembly is much too fragile. Save the screws and the metal and plastic piece if you're replacing the shell.

  17. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Note the white wire routing: 17 단계, 이미지 1/1
    • The most common reason why DS Lites don't go together properly is that this white wire is not routed properly. When reassembling, follow this routing scheme and the finished product will feel like it is fresh off the factory floor.

Wire routing is definitely something I tend to forget to note during disassemblies. Great write up.

Side note, the white wire in mine is slightly pinched and it was definitely not routed exactly this way. Must have been a Monday or a Friday at the factory, because I bought it new and this is the first time I have opened it.

  18. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Carefully separate the upper section: 18 단계, 이미지 1/2 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Carefully separate the upper section: 18 단계, 이미지 2/2
    • Make sure that both wires are routed through the center of the flex cable and carefully route the flex cable through the slit. The flex cable is incredibly fragile, and it was strengthened in later models. Take your time on this step. If it takes you ten minutes to avoid damaging the flex cable, so be it.

In case anyone else struggles with this, i found it easiest to pull the lower face piece just so you could see a space between it and the metal piece. I gently pulled the wires out, being very careful to not let them pull against the flex cable, before sliding the flex cable through the small slit in the plastic piece to separate them.

    • With the smallest flathead bit you can find, work the bit under the sticker to avoid damaging the unit as much as possible. Slightly marring the ABS plastic is nearly impossible. I've had luck more recently using a plastic razor blade.

  20. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Pry the top cover loose: 20 단계, 이미지 1/2 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Pry the top cover loose: 20 단계, 이미지 2/2
    • With the plastic spudger, pry the top cover loose. Do not remove or otherwise mess with the rubber pieces on the side. You never need to touch those, and I've seen them unnecessarily damaged and missing countless times. As noted in the comments, the screen will slide down a millimeter or two, allowing the pieces to separate easily.

This part is extremely delicate! I Snapped small chips off the top of my unit 3 times. Thankfully I’m only stripping it to put it in a brand new case. I suggest running an opening pick along the edge. They’re so thin and plastic they work quite well here.

    Matthew Young - 답글

I found a simple trick to make the disassembly of the top much much easier. After you took out the 4 Screws holding the part in you can just slide the top part (the part with the DS Logo) upwards a few millimeters and the part will be coming right off. So theres no strain on the little clips.

    Patrick Jenewein - 답글

This is how it needs to be disassembled/reassembled. These are not tapered clips, they are "L" shaped.

  21. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the top screen: 21 단계, 이미지 1/2 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove the top screen: 21 단계, 이미지 2/2
    • Begin pressing on the top screen as show here and work your way around. Be fairly gentle but note that the actual LCD is protected by a plastic shield in front and a metal shield in back.

  22. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove mic and Wi-Fi antenna: 22 단계, 이미지 1/3 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove mic and Wi-Fi antenna: 22 단계, 이미지 2/3 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Remove mic and Wi-Fi antenna: 22 단계, 이미지 3/3
    • Noting the routing of the black and white wires for later reassembly, remove the microphone and Wi-Fi antenna, carefully pulling the wires through the center of the flex cable so as not to cause any damage.

  23. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Speaker things: 23 단계, 이미지 1/1
    • These should be removed and replaced shiny side up. They may be attached here or attached to the speakers.

  24. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Carefully remove the flex cable: 24 단계, 이미지 1/3 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Carefully remove the flex cable: 24 단계, 이미지 2/3 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Carefully remove the flex cable: 24 단계, 이미지 3/3
    • If the flex cable is damaged, then you're out about $8 as of this writing. Exercise extreme caution with this fragile piece, carefully rolling it into a tight cylinder. If the flex cable is damaged, there is no way to repair the LCD, and the entire module must be scrapped. Remove and set aside the metal piece.

    • Remove three gold screws from the stylus retainer and two gold screws from the metal shield. Disassemble. You will need to gently pry loose the power switch and volume control. Wash all shell plastic pieces shown in hot, soapy water. Alcohol may be required to remove decals and other grime.

    • If you're replacing the shell with a different color, you definitely need to remove the sticker. With the iFixit metal spudger, this step is easy.

    • Slide the metal spudger under the black sticker and carefully work your way around the assembly, avoiding the flex cables. This step is easier than it looks, but only perform this step if the screen or the digitizer needs to be replaced. If both are functional, this step is unnecessary. Thoroughly clean both pieces with alcohol afterwards.

    • This step is only necessary if your upper LCD is bad. Unfortunately, this is a common problem. First, wet the contacts with flux. Then melt the solder and remove all four wires, noting their positions for reassembly. It might help to use leaded solder, but be sure to obey all local laws.

  29. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Clean flex contacts: 29 단계, 이미지 1/2 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Clean flex contacts: 29 단계, 이미지 2/2
    • Clean up the contacts as you prefer. I use a tiny American-made solder wick and I've applied some fresh lead-based solder.

  30. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Inspect flex cable: 30 단계, 이미지 1/1
    • Inspect the flex cable for damage.

    • The plastic cover is wedged underneath the back metal cover and is held on by a few different schemes, depending upon how old the DS Lite is. One method is two tabs on each side. Gently work the tabs loose without removing the back metal cover. This step is unnecessary unless you're changing the color of the shell.

  32. Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Test disassembled unit: 32 단계, 이미지 1/2 Nintendo DS Lite Disassembly, Test disassembled unit: 32 단계, 이미지 2/2
    • Optional: Test the disassembled unit. First, connect the Wi-Fi daughterboard. Connect the two screens, excluding the digitizer. While holding the battery in place, turn on the unit. Be cautious if you have removed any insulating material and there is new exposed metal. It is possible to blow a fuse or cause worse damage.

NOTE: If you’re replacing the lower LCD screen, BE SURE TO COVER THE BACK OF THE SCREEN WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE. Otherwise, you will blow one of the fuses when you attempt to test/reconnect the DS.

결론

To reassemble your device:

1) Insure that the white wire is properly routed before remounting the motherboard.

2) Carefully reassemble the shoulder buttons. This takes practice.

3) Insure that the alignment of the power switch and volume controls are correct before replacing the bottom case. Incorrect alignment will damage the motherboard and you won't be able to turn on the unit anymore.

The best guide online for fixing the DS lite. Thanks a lot!

JohnJD - 답글

I find this very specific and helpful! I will favorite this guide, once i have every materials required… especially the soldering part in this guide. Far from what i know… The guide deserved the best credits as the author included the soldering heat meter! However, i do not understand why the 2nd/middle picture (from right to left) at Step 28…

Step 28; Removing the Speaker things.

Pictures: links, the picture on the machine says… 402, not 400. - Picture is from step 28.

This step is only necessary if your upper LCD is bad. Unfortunately, this is a common problem. First, wet the contacts with flux. Then, with your iron at 400 degrees C, melt the solder and remove all four wires. It might help to add fresh solder with lead. The lead-free solder used by Nintendo sucks.

Cedric Izquierdo - 답글

I usually do my soldering between 300 and 350C.  If you do a fair amount of soldering, pick up a knockoff Hakko FG-100 tip thermometer and then get the official sensors.  This will set you back around $50 total on Amazon, but considering that the official FG-100 is over $200, it’s a steal.  Anyway…check your iron for accuracy.  The key here is heat transfer.  Use the largest tip that fits in/on the pad.  A larger tip will retain heat better and will heat a larger area at once.  Now as posted above, add some fresh leaded solder to the joint.  This will help to lower the melting temperature of the rest of the solder.  Final tip is: Don’t forget the flux.  Flux is your friend.  You can never have too much flux.  Flux will save you from bad joints, burned parts, and a lot of swearing.  Get yourself some flux in liquid and paste form.  Clean up the excess when you’re done with the highest concentration isopropyl alcohol you can find.

I am new to soldering, so i can’t say i am fair to soldering, but i am going to give it a try especially since my Nintendo DS Lite is way old and in need of fixs and therefore cant spend alot for the time being… but ill still buy it either way! Thanks for the help! reasons i am in need of it is good materials and parts is because i want it to be completely like new for myself.

Cedric Izquierdo -

I removed the solder temperature. What settings you should use will vary depending upon your situation. Desoldering the speakers is not very difficult at all, provided that you use flux, and many different techniques should work.

John Gotts -

Quick tip for putting the shoulder buttons back in place.  Don’t try to flex the spring and maneuver it into place.  You will just wind up with a missing spring and a scratched cornea.  Push the pivot pin down so most of it is hanging out of the bottom of the button.  Now you can get the pivot pin in the hole of the case while the spring is straight and not loaded.  Your shoulder button will be sticking straight up at this point.  Now swing the button down into place and it will flex/load the spring.  Problem solved…no missing spring and no eyepatches.

Anyone know if the plastic screen covers are interchangeable between the top and bottom screens?

Trevor Gunderman - 답글

Not interchangeable. The bottom "cover" is the digitizer while the top cover is just simply a clear plastic cover.

Thanks for all of the likes and feedback!

Remember that this guide is a complete teardown of the Nintendo DS Lite. Depending upon what you’re up to, you can get by with following only a portion of the steps outlined. This teardown covers everything I’ve done to repair somewhere around 100-200 DS Lites in terms of disassembly. I do not cover mainboard component removal, but you can learn about this by searching for user john_gotts on Instagram. You can see how I fix DS Lite mainboards, and how I fix other consoles such as the DSi and 3DS lines.

It is true that you can remove the mainboard, lower screen, digitizer, and screen cover as one assembly. If there is nothing wrong with this assembly, then I recommend doing that. However, you should be comfortable with removing the flex cables on the DS Lite. As illustrated, use the smallest flat head bit you can find and be very gentle and you will have no problems. This is a good skill to acquire if you want to tackle other Nintendo handheld consoles.

John Gotts - 답글

I have updated the guide thanks to all of your feedback. If you've mastered these steps, then you can graduate to disassembling almost any Nintendo handheld. The one that I've had the most trouble with is the new 3DS XL. Newer and older models, including the Switch, are not much more difficult than the DS Lite, except the ribbon cables. They can be a real challenge.

John Gotts - 답글

I’m pretty sure I messed up my DS’s reassembly. What exactly goes wrong with the DS’s motherboard if you misalign the power and volume switches? Does it cause general physical damage to the board? Or are there specific board-level components that can be replaced?

Anthony Barnard - 답글

Can i check commonly another problem is a big spreading bubble from the middle of the screen, is this a digitizer or lcd problem? Not sure if its due to humidity in Asia. Just need to verify what i need to buy and change..
