When taking the case off of the Xbox One S, take care to not damage the clips.

  1. Flip the Xbox One S so that the bottom of the case is facing upward.

  2. Insert the plastic opening tool into the gap between the bottom of the case and the grated top side. Then find the clips in between that hold the case in place.

    • Use the opening tool to pop the clips out. The best method is to pry the black case away from the bottom.

    • You will hear clicking sounds when you are prying the case open. It may be fairly difficult to remove the bottom.

    • It's possible that the clips may break when you remove the bottom from the case.

    • We recommend starting at one corner and sliding the prying tool along the edges of the Xbox One S. Once the first few clips are opened you can lift the cover up to find the remaining clips.

    You've to start from the back corner where is the information label, because there is a main clip behind a warranty sticker

    They should add this to the guide! I didnt know that, and did some minor damage to the bottom piece where that main clip is.

    I dont mind because it's my own Xbox, but what if it belonged to a customer?

    This was hard! I tried using plastic pry tools, but they did not work. A metal tool did, but make sure to watch a video or two, to see what you actually are dealing with. After the videos it went quite smoothly.

This step is necessary because you need to pry interior rivets away from the exterior case. The interior rivets that that hold the case in place are circled in the last image. After you gently pry in the areas demonstrated, the side panel of the exterior case will be able to come off of the rest of the casing. Look at the image in Step 7 for clarification on how the exterior case disassembles.

    Do not remove the back panel from the metal housing by popping loose the “rivets” in Step 5 photo. Those are not rivets, they are melted post-end mounts in which the heads will break off and CAN NOT BE REPLACED by the do-it-yourself repairer (unless you want to try hot gluing the mounts back to the panel, but success is uncertain with this method). While doing my own tear-down following the photo examples, I thought the rear panel was meant to come off due to the photo of it laying next to the body in Step 7. This is inaccurate, and will most likely result in a loose fitting panel upon reassembly. The “rivets” no longer have a means to hold onto the metal body tray they came loose from. So you will have the panel relying on alignment back to the channel the tabs came out of in order to hold it to the back of your machine. Other than this issue, I was able to perform the tear-down without problem.

    This step is both permanent, and unnecessary. Hard drive removal is possible without touching this piece. And removal of those plastic rivets will be permanent, you MUST break them to remove them.

    Essential tip: be sure to slide the metal housing backward, away from the from of the case as pictured above, rather than upward. If not, you can easily break off the teeny momentary switches on the IR blaster board!

    “appropriate method is not descriptive like Mr. Ross’s comment. The original poster should edit the description to ensure people do in fact remove the box from the case appropriately. I would also add arrows to the picture.

I struggled with the retention tabs the first time I opened the Xbox S. I dabbed a little Armor All on a Qtip and coated both sides of tabs with a little. Popped right open the second time, wiped Armor All on the fan blades as well to minimize dust collection.

Hi!

Great review of the process! I have a question, having stripped down an rebuilt an XBox One S to extract a 500 yuan note and two peties my 7 year old inserted in the CD/DVD slop, as well as a DOA DVD drive the power switch is not working. It works if I short the contact but there appears to be a square hole in the back of the power switch (the x box logo)

Should there be a conducting contact in the back of the switch and if so, is it simply a square lump of steel or is it tapered? Would like the dimensions please.
