Broken screen. The screen still worked but the glass was cracked to bits.

I viewed three different videos to pick up tips from different sources. That helped because they all had slightly different techniques and tools. Gave me confidence.
I ran into two gotchas. First, none of the videos showed that you have to remove and reuse the plastic bezel (frame) around the screen. Maybe some new screens come with a new one (they should), but mine didn't. I couldn't figure out why the new screen didn't fit right until I realized I had to reuse the old bezel. It fragile, and I broke it in one place while removing it, but that was no problem in then end--I just glued it together.
Second, the E6000 glue I got from iFixit was very hard to use. The tube opening is far too wide, and it emits a glue stream that's too big. Ends up getting all over the edges of the phone case. Instead, you need glue that comes in a tube with a tiny metal tip built into the opening, like B7000.
These two problems turned a half-hour job into a 3-hour job for me. But it came out all right in the end. Pretty easy really, if you know about these two gotchas. The new screen is bright and clear just like the original.

Remove and reuse the plastic screen bezel around the old screen, unless the new screen comes with its own (iFixit's doesn't).
Use B7000 or another glue with a fine-sized built-in metal tip.
A heat gun works great--not sure whether a hair dryer would be powerful enough.
You need something very thin to pry the first edge of the screen from the case. I used a utility knife blade until I got it open just enough to switch to a guitar pick, so I wouldn't accidentally cut anything inside. Don't use anything sharp near the battery!
