The Visio Support site helped me (via a google search). Do this before taking the extreme measures of opening up the unit: Using the Visio remote, press the Menu button, then System>Reset & Admin>Soft Power Cycle>Yes. 20 seconds later I was good to go. If you don’t have the Soft Power Cycle feature on your unit, you can unplug the unit from its power source, then press the TV’s power button on the side for 3 seconds, plug the cord back into the power source, then turn on the TV. If this doesn’t work, there are other steps which were unnecessary for me.
Now here's an issue that would seem to apply to many users doing this repair: if the screen is nonfunctional, how do you power-off the device? When I dropped my iPhone, the screen went almost completely dark, midnight blue, actually. I can use the power button at the top of the phone to turn the display on and off, but I can't get the phone to power off. Seems the only way to do it is to wait until the battery is exhausted.
