i followed the steps for fresh install of OS X that were given with the replacing hard drive steps. i clicked the erase tab, left volume format on MAC OS EXtended (journaled) and hit erase. when it was done i closed disk utility and when i got to the destination section, the hard drive icon was red instead of green.
