Hello! My name is Oliver Du Bois, and I’m a student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, Florida. I am majoring in Spaceflight Operations with a minor in Human Factors.

My interest in everything space-related has been with me ever since I was a child. Whether I was becoming invested in sci-fi franchises such as Star Wars and Star Trek, stargazing each night, or being told the Moon was following me during long drives at night, space has always been a large factor in my life. Growing up, I could never imagine myself living a life that does not involve exploring the great, vastly unknown frontier that is space. Eighteen years of life later and I am still entirely devoted to traversing space. My dream is to become an mission control specialist astronaut, so that I may traverse the cosmos and inform the public of what is out there.

I am currently the News Editor of The Avion Newspaper, Embry-Riddle’s school paper. As News Editor, I am frequently working to better both myself in regards to my writing skills, and even more so to better the Avion as a whole. My love for writing has been one of the few constants I have held my entire life, and it is the one hobby I have never grown bored with. Working as a News Editor allows me to share my adoration of writing and reporting with a mass of people, through the creation of a tangible representation of my interests. I have been able to interview people I would never think of talking to, attend events unimaginable to me and watch my reporters grow into strong writers, which is a dream come true.

One of my largest accomplishments, of which I am the most proud, is the work I have done as a a John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital transgender youth representative. By sharing my story through a multitude of both written and video interviews, I have worked extensively with All Children’s in their application for a grant to better assist transgender youth in the medical field. This has also allowed for me to connect with transgender youth across the globe and provide a mentorship role to those who may need it.

I also have a large amount of experience with organizing and planning events such as conferences. While working as the Treasurer’s Secretary for Florida Association of Orthotists and Prosthetists (FAOP), I was tasked with planning FAOP’s yearly conferences to certify practitioners. These years of experience with running such large conferences has since allowed me to become the Communications and Marketing Director for the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical  University Daytona TEDx Committee, where we will be creating our own TEDx events yearly.

Even though I have little-to-no repair experience, the iFixit Project is very important to me for the same reason my love for journalism is: I am able to inform people of things they may have not known about. I am enthused beyond belief to have an opportunity to be on this platform where I may bring awareness to new fixes.
