A battery failure seems like the most likely problem. MacBooks do not turn on if the battery is damaged regardless of it being plugged in. To restore functionality only Apple and select Best Buy stores have the right tools to make it work again. Apple has this tool called a Horizon Machine which pairs the home button to the logic board. Only Apple and some Best Buy stores have these.
