Phone Will Not Power On
The telephone does not respond or show any signs of powering on.
Power Cord Not Plugged In
Make sure the power cord is securely plugged into the wall outlet and into the back of the telephone. If this does not work, reset the telephone. To do this, unplug the electrical power. Wait for approximately 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Allow up to one minute for the telephone to rest.
No Dial Tone
The display shows no line. I cannot get a dial tone.
Telephone Line Not Plugged In
Make sure you plug the telephone line cord securely and firmly into the telephone and the telephone wall jack
Defective Telephone Line Cord
If the previous suggestions do not work, disconnect the telephone line cord from your telephone and connect the telephone line cord to another telephone. If there is no dial tone on that other telephone either, your telephone line cord may be defective. Install a new telephone line cord.
Defective Telephone Wall Jack
If changing the telephone line cord does not help, the wall jack (or the wiring to this wall jack) may be defective. Try using a different wall jack in your home to connect your CL4940 telephone, or contact your telephone service provider.
System Error
The system may have operation troubles. To solve this, reset the phone by disconnecting the electrical power for about 15 seconds. Then plug it back in and wait for one minute to allow the telephone to reset.
I cannot dial out.
- Try all the suggestions, as mentioned above.
- Make sure you have a dial tone before dialing.
Background Noise
- Eliminate any background noise. Noise from a television, radio, or other appliance may cause the phone to not dial out properly. If you cannot eliminate the background noise, first try moving the telephone before dialing, or dialing from another room with less background noise.
Telephone Service Problem
- If other phones in your home are having the same problem, contact your telephone service provider.
I hear other calls while using my phone.
Phone Service Disorder/ Wiring Problem
- Disconnect the telephone from the telephone jack, and plug in a different telephone. If you still hear other calls, call your telephone service provider.
System announces: "Time and Day not set."
Telephone Has Been Reseted
- You need to set the system clock.
1. Press MENU -> press ▽/△ to scroll to Set date/time -> press SELECT.
2. Use the dialing keys (0-9) to enter the month (MM), date (DD) and year (YY) -> Press
SELECT.
3. Use the dialing keys (0-9) to enter the hour (HH) and minute (MM).
4. Press ▽/△ to select AM or PM -> press SELECT to save your setting.
You can press CANCEL to go back to the previous field and make correction.
I get noise or static when I use the telephone base.
DSL Internet Service Interference
- If you subscribe to high-speed internet service (DSL - digital subscriber line) through your telephone line, you must install a DSL filter between the telephone line cord and the telephone wall jack. The filter prevents noise and caller ID problems as a result of DSL interference. Contact your DSL service provider for more information about DSL filters.
Telephone Installed Near Other Electronic Devices
- Do not install this phone near a microwave oven or on the same electrical outlet. You may experience decreased performance while the microwave oven is operating.
Modem/ Surge Protector Problems
- If you plug your phone in with a modem or a surge protector, plug the phone (or modem/surge protector) into a different location. If this does not solve the problem, relocate your phone or modem farther apart from one another, or use a different surge protector.
Phone Service Disorder
- If other phones in your home are having the same problem, contact your telephone service provider.

Display has broken characters for caller ID - impossible to read. Are there batteries to this phone?
Connie Springer - 답글
unplug from the phone jack & power supply or remove the battery to reboot the memory.
you'll have to reset all previous settings.
if the cid is still unreadable, your phone got fried by a power hit & it probably can't be fixed.

it should have come with a bracket to mount on the back that places the phone at an angle that will keep the receiver on hook.

Every feature seems to work except outgoing announcements. Attempts to record by two different people, each following the manual, result in no outgoing announcement. Re-setting to Default Announcement (claimed to be permanently available in phone) shows “Announcement Reset” on display and sounds “confirmation tone” but still results in no outgoing announcement.

Phone has dial tone but can not call out. Only rings once but ringer is set for 3.
evas864 - 답글
if you still hear dial tone after hitting 1 number, your polarity is reversed on that jack.
ringing once indicates you have a short somewhere in your wiring or equipment.

there's a short in your line somewhere. could be the phone, could be wiring, could be cable trouble.
only way to know is plug a working phone in to your outside network interface. if the same problem is there, you have cable trouble.

My CL4940 phone has worked perfectly for several years when I had a problem with getting messages starting in February. I called AT&T and their solution was to set up a mailbox with a code and a lot more extra work to get your messages and 21 messages were in there datingback to February. Before on my phone, all I had to do was push play and I could hear the messages which had the number of messages and blinked. What went wrong? I don't want to have to Now dial up another number to get my messages. They said add a couple more rings on your phone and then I guess the phone will pick it up but it didn't work. Help please!
Lona B Creations - 답글
hit the "delete x" button on the upper right of the keypad, 2nd button down.
it should ask if you want to delete all messages, hit it again.

Why caller ID is not displayed on At&t CL4940. I receive calls but no caller ID (number) is displayed.
alihaidereagle - 답글
does your display light up on the incoming call? if so, reset the phone by unplugging the phone jack & power supply, then reconnect.
if the display doesn't light up on an incoming call, have you checked your power supply/transformer? if so, have you checked your ac outlet?
if this doesn't resolve the issue your phone may have gotten toasted by a power spike.
it's a good idea to plug them into a surge protector...they're cheaply made.

The speaker function works but the handset does not. Tried another handset and it did not work as well.
Is there a re-set option or is the card bad?
Joe Hultberg - 답글
Did you use the same receiver cord when you switched out the handset? They don't make them like they used to. I've had several go bad. Also, you might look at the 4 contacts where the cord plugs into both the phone & handset to see if any of the contacts are crossed/touching each other causing a short. When the handset is in the cradle the switch hook is in the off position which is why the speaker would work. If than handset you switched out works on another phone, that points to either the cord or the contacts...try switching out the cord that works on another phone first.
