System is Overheating
After running for a short period of time the laptop becomes very hot or the fan begins to run loudly.
Vent is Clogged with Dust
Overheating often is caused by dust clogging the vent. To fix this apply compressed air from a moderate distance. Do not apply the compressed air directly, because it may damage the fan.
Environmental Temperature too High
Asus laptops are designed to operate in temperatures between 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F). If the laptop is exposed to temperatures exceeding 35°C (95°F) the cooling system will not function properly. To fix this, avoid using the laptop in environments exceeding 35°C (95°F).
Device is Running Very Hot
Asus laptops are designed to operate in temperatures of 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F). If the laptop is often exceeding 35°C (95°F) after the vent has been cleaned, or is in cool environmental temperature, the laptop fan may need to be replaced. The fan may sometimes become dislodged or stuck if the laptop is often moved roughly. Sometimes, small objects can become lodged within the fan chamber, or the fan blades can break due to aforementioned reasons. The laptop may buzz or vibrate, and it may sound as though something is clipping, or tapping inconsistently, or consistently, when these sounds were not noticed before. These sounds are good indicators the fan may be dislodged, stuck, or broken. If this is suspected, read the appropriate repair / replacement guide.
System Operates Slowly
The system operates slower than it should normally or appears to be struggling to load pages.
The system operating slowly can be attributed to a few issues. First, delete all excess tabs. Multiple tabs or running programs can cause the system to be overworked. Some programs may take more processing power than others. You are able to check your device's information in the “Task Manager” by searching it up in the Window Menu. Click on the “Performance” tab and you can see the details of how your laptop is running. Force close any unneeded programs that are taking up lots of processing power. If this fails to work, restart the device and let it sit for a couple of minutes before attempting to log back in. If this too fails, you may need to clean out your storage if it is full. If that too fails, some deeper internal issues may need to be addressed and repaired.
Pairing Issues
The device does not connect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when attempting to pair with either.
Laptop will not Connect to Wi-Fi
If the laptop won’t connect to Wi-Fi, it is more likely that the Router needs to be reset than it is for the device to be in some way damaged. First, restart the device. Second, make sure that your device is not plugged into an Ethernet cable or another Wi-Fi service. You can “Forget Network” and try to log back into it. Restart again if that fails to fix the issue. Restart the Router by unplugging it and plugging it back in, wait five minutes or so and attempt to reconnect devices to it. If other devices are able to connect but your device still isn’t, attempt to directly connect it via ethernet cable. Wi-Fi can also lose its strength over distance, if you are far from the router your connection may be faulty or disconnect often. This is a router issue usually, and not the device itself. Check to see too if “Airplane mode” is enabled, turn this off. Make sure you aren’t running a Mobile Hotspot, this will not fix the issue as the Hotspot needs a stable connection already to boost the signal for other devices to connect to. If the laptop will not connect to the Wi-Fi when other devices are, please refer to the corresponding repair guide.
Laptop will not Pair with Bluetooth Devices
If the device will not pair with a bluetooth device, it is more likely to be the secondary device having issues. Make sure both the laptop and the other bluetooth device are not already connected to other devices themselves. Make sure that other devices, if they already have connected to the bluetooth or the laptop in the past, have their bluetooth modes off. This is because the other devices may auto-connect even if you reset the devices you want linked. If all fails, reset both devices and have them on “search” mode at the same time. Pair if the appropriate device. If it is still failing to connect, consult the secondary device’s manual, and the laptop’s. If other devices are able to pair with the bluetooth device, but not the laptop, connecting to Wi-Fi and turning off hotspots may help. If not, please consult the corresponding repair guide for the laptop if you believe something to be damaged within the laptop.
The Touch Screen is not Working
The screen does not respond to touch or does but is difficult to use.
Interruption between Software and Hardware
If the system is not working as it should be, resetting it can often help. This feature allows you to close personal files or remove them entirely and then reinstall windows. Follow instructions in this video to reset Asus laptop.
Improper Calibration
One possible solution to the touch screen not working is because it just needs a simple calibration. Windows often interferes with laptop settings causing a number of problems to occur with laptop processes. To recalibrate your Asus, use the following instructions:
- Navigate to the windows search bar and search calibrate and then open ”Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input”.
- Click the display tab and find reset, click reset to restore default calibration values.
- Make sure to confirm your changes and then restart the PC.
Audio is Distorted
Audio coming from the speakers / headphones sounds abnormal.
Broken Internal Speakers
First, make sure that your device isn’t muted. Go to the bottom right corner of your screen using your cursor, click on the up arrow key and click on the audio speaker icon. If there is an “X” next to this icon, it means your device is muted. Second, it is important to confirm the audio is coming from the laptop speakers themselves, and not connected to third party speakers through the audiojack or via a bluetooth mode. If there are connected headphones or plugged in speakers, move to the Broken External Speakers Troubleshooting Guide. If it has been confirmed that nothing is connected to the device via bluetooth or audiojack, continue to the repair / replacement guide for the laptop speakers.
Broken External Speakers
Distorted audio may be caused by old or damaged external speakers/headphones being used. If this is the case, speakers/headphones will need to be replaced to correct this issue. Prior to replacement, connect speakers to a different device’s audiojack. If possible, also attempt to use other speakers/ headphones in the audio jack that the distorted audio originates to determine if the jack itself may be the issue.
Audio Jack is Obstructed
If the audio jack is clogged compressed air can be used to remove debris. If air is unsuccessful in removing the debris, a paper clip along with tape can be used. To do this, fix tape around the end of the paper clip so that it is attached firmly and has the adhesive part facing outward.
Out of Date Sound Driver
If the audio is distorted regardless of source or volume, the sound driver may be out of date. To correct this the sound driver will need to be updated. Instructions on how to update the sound driver can be found at this link.
Monitor is Black and/or Will Not Power On
When pressing the “power on” button, the laptop screen remains black or the computer refuses to power on.
Device Needs to be Reset
Occasionally, the black screen is a simple glitch when the operating system loses its connection to the screen display. When this happens, the first thing to do is press the windows logo key, Ctrl key, shift key, and B all at the same time. This will reset the connection so that the operating system regains its display. Check to see if the normal display comes back onto your Asus laptop once finished. If normal display does not come back proceed to a hard reset using the instructions listed below.
Hard Reset Required
Other devices connected to the laptop could be the cause of the black screen. If this happens to be the cause you may happen to notice dots spinning as the laptop is trying to boot up. To fix this problem, a hard reset is needed. Follow the steps listed below for a hard reset.
- Power off Asus Laptop
- Unplug the power cord, remove the battery and disconnect all external connected peripheral devices from your laptop.
- Leave laptop off for ~30 seconds
- Press and hold the power button for about 60 seconds.
- Put your battery back in the laptop and connect the power cord
- Turn on your laptop and check if it boots up properly
Dark Screen
If there are obvious signs the laptop is powering on, such as the vents begin audibly moving, a power-light comes on, or other indication sounds play, it may mean your monitor is damaged. First, check your brightness setting. Go into a dark room and wait a moment for your eyes to adjust before looking at the monitor to see if it is visible, but faint. If it is, log in normally and go to your device “search” in the bottom left corner, and type in “brightness”, a “change brightness level” will appear, click on it and adjust accordingly. If the monitor is not on at all, is partially lit, or discolored, read the repair / replacement guide.
Refusal to Power On After Charging
If the device refuses to power-on all together, even after plugging it in and charging it for over an hour, the battery may be fully drained and fully dead. This is different from the battery simply being “dead,” which is to say it has run out of charge. The battery being “fully dead” means that the battery itself has been fully discharged and will not recharge. This happens with age and repeated use, and is natural for all batteries. All batteries will begin to run out of charge faster and faster overtime, eventually leading to a sudden death, often also attributed to poor conditions such as very cold or hot ambient temperatures. If the device shows no signs of activity after plugging it in and charging it, then clicking the power button, or other various buttons with no lights, flashing, or sounds, the device may be fully dead. Please read the matching repair / replacement guide to repair the fully-dead/discharged battery.
Keyboard is Unresponsive
The keyboard does not respond to touch or some of the keys do but not all of them.
Undiagnosed Software Error
Simply restarting the laptop will often fix system issues; Power off the laptop and wait approximately 30 seconds, then press the power button to power on.
Driver Out of date
Keyboard responsiveness can sometimes be tied to an out of date driver. Follow this link in order to update your driver.
Battery Issues
The battery drains quickly or the device refuses to charge.
Battery Life Drains Quickly
Battery life can typically last 5 hours on the Asus Q505UA-BI5T7 when disconnected from its charger. If the battery life seems to be draining quickly, there are a multitude of issues that can be causing it to do so. Brightness consumes the battery life of a device quite quickly, consider turning it down if you are already in a dim environment. Multiple Tabs consume processing power, cutting down on the amount of tabs you have open can save power, and the speed of your device. Loud volume, or intensive programs such as video-games or renderings take lots of energy from your device. Consider plugging in your device if you are running such programs. You can also adjust the battery optimization of your device with a slider by searching “Battery Saver Settings” in your windows options. It is common and natural for all batteries to begin to age with use overtime. One of the signs of an aging device is a battery which discharges quicker than it should. Poor conditions such as very cold or hot ambient temperatures can increase the aging of the device, including the battery. If it seems the device is rapidly discharging, including when plugged in, please read the corresponding repair / replacement guide for the battery.
Laptop Won't Charge
There are a few issues that can lead to a device not charging. First, make sure that the cable is fully plugged into both the wall outlet, and the computer. Make sure it has a firm connection and that it is not loosely connected or at a strange angle. Second, if the device still has charge, restart it. If that doesn’t work, turn the device off and charge it, then turn it back on after about thirty minutes and see if the charge went up on the device. Some outlets may be poor or underpowered, try plugging the device into a different outlet to charge it. Attempt to turn on battery saving mode, turn the brightness down, or close extra programs and see if the charge begins to go up. The power-cable may be damaged and in need of replacement. If replacing the power-cable does not work, please read the corresponding repair / replacement guide for the device’s battery.
Laptop Battery is Dead
There is a difference between the battery being dead and fully-drained/fully-dead. All electronic devices if not plugged into a power outlet will eventually lose power causing their batteries to “die.” This temporary “dead state” can be remedied by plugging the device in and waiting for thirty minutes or longer for the device to charge. Make sure each connection is firm and not loose. If the device will not charge read the “Laptop Won’t Charge” troubleshooting section. If the laptop battery is believed to be the cause please read the corresponding repair / replacement guide for the device’s battery.
