Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Troubleshooting
Released August 2012.
Device will not power on.
The device would not power on or appear to have battery power.
Charger does not recharge battery
Test power coming from charger for power flow to make sure charger is operating correctly. Try a different charger to see if the issue is with the charger or the battery.
Battery connectivity
Check the battery light on the device when the power button is pressed. The indicator light should come on showing the device has power or flash if the battery is low.
Bad battery
Check the battery to see if it will charge and hold charge. If device works when plugged in but not if unplugged, the battery or it’s connectivity will be the issue.
Power button does not work
Test power button by using a voltmeter to see if the button is switching power or not. It can also be tested by knowing the battery is charged and making a connection to the laptop if it will still not power on.
Computer will not come on/Boot up
The computer will not go past the boot up screen
Wrong amount of Ram
If the computer will not fully boot up and makes a constant beeping noise the Ram is in wrong. If the screen has a lot of lines running across the page the ram could of been knocked loose. When the computer becomes very slow at doing memory based task or it crashes the amount of Ram is to little or the Ram is bad. The Ram will need to be replaced.
Hard Drive Error
When the computer is booting up an Hard drive error could appear. While using the computer files could start disappearing. The Hard drive itself will begin making very loud noises and clicking. These are symptoms of a bad Hard drive. They’re many ways to test to see if you have a bad Hard drive. The computer should have a system built in to run a test on it. Also, they’re many free downloadable programs that will test the Hard Drive. If your computer will not boot up or you get a blue screen then the Hard drive must be replaced.
Screen is Non-responsive
The screen freezes randomly and also displays lines of colors across the screen. Fails to show the login screen after turning on from being shut down; instead, the screen is black.
Disconnected/Faulty Display Cables
There could potentially be an connection issue where the wires within the system are crimp/broken. The screen may flash because the wires are not completely broken in half, but are faulty enough to cause the screen to black out and/or turn back on, display a variety of colors, and/or freeze.
Wrong Windows Update
ThinkPads that are updated to Microsoft Windows 8.1 resemble a non-responsive screen. The screen may appear black with a hanging mouse pointer visible on the screen. Reboot the ThinkPad into ‘Safe Mode.’ This allows you to uninstall the NVIDIA display adapter from the ‘Device Manager.’ After completing this, reboot the ThinkPad into ‘Windows’ and run the ‘Windows Update’ to install the proper NVIDIA display adapter.
Damaged Cables Behind Screen
Perhaps the various colors come from internal issues and functions behind the screen. By replacing the screen and hooking new cables up the the ThinkPad system, the colors should disappear with the new screen. The old screen may have had internal damage: such as water damage, an internal crack, or faulty cables.
Device is Overheating
Your device feels hot to the touch when you are working on it. The fan is constantly running and making a really loud whirring noise. The computer shuts down on its own out of nowhere.
Outdated Software
You may need to update the your computer’s BIOS to the latest version. This often times corrects this issue.
Dust in Vent
Sometimes dust can collect in the computer vents and block the flow of air. This can easily cause the computer to overheat. Use a dust remover spray or compressed air to carefully clean the dust from the laptop vents.
Device has missing files or crashes frequently
The device experiences normal hard drive symptoms like crashes, missing files as well as error messages or even audible clicking.
The hard drive is froze
You may need to reset the hard drive by hitting F8 and doing a reset. Be aware that this will delete stored data and reset to factory settings.
Hard drive is bad
You may need to replace the hard drive completely to fix the problem. The hard drive can cause many issues. It contains the main data for the computer.
