Installed 2T HD but have 1G memory available

My iMac crashed. Disk couldn't be fixed. I installed the 2T Seagate per the ifixit instructions. They were perfect and everything works perfect. Problem is, I now have only 1G memory. What have I done wrong? I expected more than that.

How are you getting this information? Try click once on your hard drive icon then go under file to get info. I think you may be confusing your RAM (memory) with available hard drive space.

Thanks for responding. I guess I am confusing them. The hd has 1.94TB available. I assumed (yeah, I know) that would translate to memory. RAM is 1GB. Now I feel like an idiot. What can I do about that? That's way less than when it died.

Please give us the last three figures of your serial number so we know which machine you have. Go under the Apple in the upper left hand corner to "about this Mac" > More info > memory and see what your machine has. Try reseating the RAM sticks if both are not seen. Understand that a stick or a slot can go out.

"Now I feel like an idiot." Humility is good for the soul.

Here is what the computer shows. I have included info about hd, mac info and I opened applications to show its memory at the bottom of the window. Hope you can see it. Thanks.

Looks like you can't so: About this MAC shows 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

All apps, users, system files, etc are under the new HD with 1.94 TB shown available so can I utilize that for RAM? I'm obviously mussing something here. I thought I could. Thanks.

Please give us the last three figures of your serial number so we can tell you how much RAM your machine can take.

Standard installed RAM is 1 GB, which is made up by two 512 MB SO-DIMM modules installed.

Apple officially supports 3 GB of RAM using 1GB and 1 2GB modules, but third-parties have been able to upgrade the system to 4 GB of RAM using two 2 GB memory modules with some limitations as only 3 GB can be used as there is a risk of memory overlap with the video.

Even still doing two 2 GB modules is better as you get inter-leaved memory which is faster memory I/O than a mix set.

No an 1174 can handle up to 500mgb hard drive any more and it will not recognize the hard drive

Why do you say this? What do you think limits the system or the OS to 500GB? OS-X systems don't have the same limitations as Windows PC systems. As an example OS-X 10.2 limit was 2TB using the older HFS plus file system. Today its some where in the Exabyte level. Here see for your self: Mac OS X- Mac OS Extended format (HFS Plus) volume and file limits
