need advise on HDD

I purchased a MacBook Pro Model A1226 with no HDD, battery, or power cord. I purchased the battery and power cord but it will not work. The computer turns on but screen is just white with a question mark in middle of screen. Is this because I need a HDD? What kind should I buy? Any help is much appreciated.

Yes - without a HD you have no operating system. The graphic is illustrating it can not identify a partition with a valid system folder from which to boot.
