SSD Failed, Asus warranty policies asinine

My Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A SSD failed, and Asus is being asinine about replacing it under warranty. I won't post my entire rant about it hear, suffice it to say I don't feel like jumping through their hoops. If I buy a regular Samsung 840 SSD, will I be able to put that in there. I don't have a T5 torx bit yet, so I am unable to open the laptop and look.

While Asus may not cover the SSD under warranty you still have the SSD manufactures warranty. Once you open the unit check out getting it replaced under warranty with that manufactures coverage.

As to using something else sure it shouldn't be an issue as long as it fits. Remember there are two standard sizes of SSD cases 2.2 & 3.5 (like the HD sizes). It's also possible Asus uses a bare SSD unit like Apple does. So don't buy anything until you have had a chance to open your system and check the specs of the current unit. As that too maybe a factor on what you put in. You still will have issues re-installing the OS onto the new unit. Make sure you research how to do that.

FYI - This is the SOP of any system, I have not opened up a ZenBook myself to see what makes it tick.

To answer your other question, no, a standard SATA III SSD will not fit. ASUS used a proprietary adapter for their SSD, & only theirs will fit directly. There is an adapter available for M.2 drives, but you will likely have to modify the bottom of the case for it to fit. The one I used was too tall, & we had to basically give it a hood scoop to fit.
