G4 iMacs? (specifically replace Optical Drive)

First off I find it odd that you have guides for G3 + G5 iMacs, but not G4s

I have an old G4 iMac with a dead optical drive, this makes it very difficult to install 10.4 or 10.5 on it (I could use a firewire drive, but that's sort of dodging the problem, plus I have a spare SATA DVD-Burner, but not a firewire one)

Anyone know how to replace the Optical drive?

HERE or HERE are guide to take the G4 apart.

a drive compatibility list is HERE

the drives mostly used are LG/Pioneer or Sony - the important part is the length of the drive

You can try clean the drive, but no always fix the problem, you can buy a replacement but i'ts expensive, cheaper option a firewire drive (faster burning).
