Is there an already fused gampad/digitizer assembly?

I have a scratch on my gamepad's screen. Sadly the digitizer and LCD are fused, I'm going to have to buy both.

Does any one know where I can get a prefused assembly?

I plan on documenting my repair if I can to help other people.

i've been working on my first WiiU screen/digitizer replacement. I must say it is a challenge. it's all pretty basic but the routing of the wires and the very tiny ribbon cables prove to be...grrr. The replacement digitizer has a ribbon that with a different tip that is silver and it won't slide into the clamp (It looks like it would work if i snipped off the silver end with scissors). I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner. If you're good with electronic repair...go fo it.

Just took my LCD apart. Not sure where this "fused to the screen" business came from (yes, I saw it in the tear down as well). You just pry around the edges of the LCD to get the digitizer off.

Was it very hard to do that? Did you manage to get another digitizer on there?

Not hard, just requires patience. An extra set of hands wouldn't hurt. All you're doing is prying the metal tabs up and over the LCD plastic tabs on all 4 sides. There's really not even much need for a guide, it's pretty apparent just from looking at the LCD once it comes out.

With one set of hands, they tend to slide back in place as soon as you move to a new side. I did not replace my digitizer (but I could have). Turned out my issue was board related so I fixed that and put LCD/digitizer back together. Everything working well now.

To me the word 'fused' means glued or inseparable without destroying one of the components. I don't know why ifixit says this is fused.

Hey Jesse, I have the same problem and I bought a new digitizer, separated the screen, replaced the digitizer but I still can't make the touch screen work. I noticed you mentioned you had a "board problem" and you fixed it, I suspect I have the same problem.. can you please specify what you did and what was the problem? I'm running out of ideas and I've searched everywhere, I really would like to avoid having to buy a refurbished gamepad if I can just make it work.. everything else on the gamepad works correctly, the screen, the range, etc, just not the touch pad.

thanks in advance!

rob.

Roberto, my issue ended up being liquid damage to one of the IC's causing video distortion, so I'm afraid I'm not much help here. Assuming you've already done a recalibration in the menu, my advice is to make sure touchscreen ribbon cable is fully in the socket. If still no good, put pressure on the board near the socket while its on to see if its a broken connection or board flex issue. If you still can't get anything, 2 digitizers not working sounds like a bad board.

I see, thank you for your answer!

I had the problem for the first year but intermitently, it worked for a few months, then stopped, then came back working, finally stopped working again on december and I decided to replace the digitizer.. I'll open the gamepad again and triple check it's all good and apply preasure, could be the socket like you say.. I'll try to confirm if the digitizer works by measuring outside with a tester or arduino, gotta find the specs sheet for that one.

thanks!

My young son recently dropped our black Wii U GamePad and cracked the LCD screen. Needless to say I was not impressed. I was quoted $150AUD repair/$180AUD replacement. So I thought I'd give a go to repair it myself and ordered a new screen and digitizer for $45AUD.

Upon dissembling the unit, I noticed the digitizer and screen were fused together with a thin, black double-sided adhesive tape. I managed to separate the two and also removed the adhesive tape without damaging it and reused it for the new components. There's also a thin black plastic frame stuck to the face of the digitizer with a similar sticky adhesive strip which needs to be separated as well. This frame sits between the GamePad housing and digitizer.

After reassembling the unit all seemed good, but for one small problem. The new digitizer worked in reverse - up was down, left was right. So I tore it apart again, reattached the old digitizer to the new screen, put it back together and bingo! All was good.

WARNING! Tearing and reassembling the controller is not for the feint of heart. It requires a lot of patience, a steady hand and a large magnifying glass. Two of the ZIF connectors are very small and is an exercise in frustration re-inserting the tiny ribbon cables into their respective sockets.

I can confirm that the lcd and digitizer are not fused together. The digitizer is glued to the top lcd frame, which is attached to the bottom lcd frame by some interlocking tabs. I installed my new lcd into the old frames (it has heat absorbing padding on its backside) and was back in business.
