Is it possible to replace the HDD Fan?

Hi,

Recently my iMac froze while some hard rendering and did not respond to anything. After a hard shut down the machine started and shut itself down again and it wasn't possible to start it again.

After about 30 minutes later I tried to start it up again and it worked. Since then I don't have any problems anymore but it did worry me so I checked my mac with the AHT and my HDD fan got the following Error

"Error --9 Motor unable to stabilize between min and max Limits"

So it seems that I have to replace my HDD fan. It is possible to buy it, but how hard is it to replace it? Is there somebody who already did that procedure?

Thanks

Mirko

Please give us the last four figures of your serial number located on the bottom of your stand for identification purposes.

The last 4 four figures are DHJW

To answer your question we need a less generic ID of your exact machine. (there are 14 different guides that match your ID, that could be 14 different Answers!).

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Sorry i thought that was clear since I started the question in the repair guides for my model. My bad, as you can see it is my first question.

I have a Mid 2011 iMac, 27". I hope that is Identification enough. If not I added the 4 last digits of the serial number in a comment on my starting thread.

Mirko - it might not be the fan, but the fan controller. AFAIK there are only two fans in the box a left and a right. I think, but I'm not certain, that the right fan is for the optical drive and the HHD. The left fan for the CPU and the GPU. The right fan is not too difficult to replace... the left one is much more difficult.
