Hi
It is possible and yes it is alot of work. If you have the time, patience, and expertise to do it, then go for it. If not, have someone else do it for you. I have done it before for an iPhone 4 and I would say the hardest part is precisely positioning the power and volume buttons in place and making sure they are functional.
