Grey Screen at start up. No Single User,

Tonight, I put the computer to sleep and went out for a walk. When I returned, I pressed a key, which one I couldn't say. I think I saw only the grey screen with the Apple Logo. (Personal memory is a bit faulty.)I turned the computer off and restarted it several times. All that appeared was the grey screen with Apple Logo. A message about the monitor appeared and stayed. Usually, it goes before the desktop appears. I had to manually exit this message. I tried to use Command-S for the single user and fsck, but I don't reach that far. Everything I have read implies that the command prompt appears quickly. If I leave the computer on, eventually the fan goes into becomes very loud.

In place of the single user message, I see the following. Some of the letters at the very edge of the monitor are difficult to read.

Underneath the DART enabled is a white square which I assume would be where I would begin to type, except nothing happens when I type.

Computer is a G5 w/OS x.10.4.11 There is plenty of memory.

In the G5 is a 2nd hard drive with OS X10.3. I can't access this either.

There are 2 hard drives in the G5. I have pressed the Option key at start up and the 2 drives show up, but which ever I choose, the screen stays grey with the Apple Logo.

Help would be appreciated.

Would appreciate help. I have to finish a project for the wife by Saturday for an event on Sunday.

Start up from your latest system installation disk by inserting the disk and holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen then the pull down menu. Pull down under Utilities to Disk Utility. Run the repair on both drives. Then restart holding down the P - R- Command _ Shift keys and keep holding till it tones three times. Try restarting now holding down the Shift key. If that works then try restarting normally.

The only thing I would add is to run disk repair until it reports no trouble found. (Sometimes takes more than one pass) + Ralph

When I insert the Install Disk and start with C, I still only see a grey screen. I also tried to start up with the Option Key and a back up drive with a copy of the OS X.4. Still nothing but grey screens. I tried shift-option-command-delete and still nothing but a grey screen.

Sorry, I didn't get back to you. I finally took the G5 to a shop with a good reputation, where I was told that it was a serious problem. The repairman ran all sorts of tests, before giving me the bad news. I forget what part died but I was told that it was one of the very expensive ones. The Repairman suggested that I could buy a used one and replace the bad part of that computer into mine. Or I could buy a new one with a warranty. I had some money at the time and bought an iMac.

The Hard drives were in good shape and were rescued, enclosed and added to the iMac.
