Turns on, screen is black, turns off in 4 seconds.

So I searched around but couldn't find anyone with exactly the same problem as me...Most people's macs who turn on but the screen is black stay on, but mine doesn't. I've reset SMC, PRAM and done RAM test, ie taking each one out at a time and running it with each different one multiple times. When I turn it on, I hear the HDD start spinning, and fans, but then they all stop and it turns off. The magsafe adapter works and the battery charges. The screen stays completely black the whole time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Help us help you. The more complete the description of your problem is ( what OS you're using - 10.?? the history of when and how this problem originated) the more assistance we can provide, and, the sooner we can provide it.

Was the unit wet, dropped or did it suffer other physical damage?

Hi, sorry my opening description was so brief, I'll try and be more specific. I was using Mac OS 10.6. It happened when I left my mac on overnight, so the battery drained. I plugged it in in the morning and the aforementioned symptoms occurred. Then, I left it plugged in for most of the day, and it turned on like normal. After I turned it off this time, to prevent drain, it refused to start again. I have repeated my original fix of charging it up and it has not worked. The battery does charge, as the battery indicator lights went from half on to all on, and the magsafe power adapter is orange when plugged in. It once had liquid spilled on the keyboard, years ago, as well as being dropped, again, years ago, both with no symptoms at the time. Please let me know if there's anything else you need to know or I need to do!

Try holding down the power button for more than 10 seconds, but less than 30. If it boots immediately release the power button. You are attempting to force boot and EFI check the box. FWIW I would not try to run Mavericks or higher on that box. You are pushing the envelope very hard, and won't get full use from it anyway. Mavericks is known to have a plethora of problems related to sleep, deep sleep and restarting especially with older boxes. Pre-Installed MacOS: X 10.6.3 (10D2094) Maximum MacOS: APPLE CLAIMS This system fully supports the last version of OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion" and the current version of OS X 10.9 "Mavericks," except for "Power Nap" and "AirPlay Mirroring" (which also requires an Apple TV 2nd Gen or higher).

Thanks for the help, but it simply boots straight away...

Try a Repair Boot, a APPLE DIAGNOSITICS boot and a Safe boot. Any different from behavior? Restart your Mac. Press and hold Command+R until you see the Apple logo. If your Mac doesn’t boot from the Recovery HD after Step 2, hold down the Option key while booting to display the built-in Startup Manager. ALSO see this article

Thanks for all the help but again none of these have any impact on the behaviour. Just starts up, no chime, no screen, and shuts down again.

Time to let Apple look at it for an estimate - they can tell you what's wrong.
