Disc Tray stuck open.

You will have to remove the tray inside the drive and realign it. There is a video HERE that explains how to do it, this vid is for a slim console but the phat drives aren't much different.

Sounds like he over extended the ejection motor arm. Try and use something you can slip into the slot, but first look at one of the Xbox repair guides for that model so you will know where to push, what to push, which direction to push to try and get that arm back on its normal track. I disassembled my sons a few years ago not really that technical just took awhile following a teardown guide for the same issue. The motors arm is located on the outside of the DVDS drive so you may only need to remove the main cover to see the arm you need to adjust back, if it's not broken.
