Refuses to get out of headphone mode (A1387)

I have a Verizon 4S, and I had just finished replacing the front screen as well as replacing the headphone jack. The headphone jack is working when I have headphones plugged in, but when I remove the headphones, the phone refuses to recognize there are no headphones plugged.

  • Settings -> Sounds -> Change With Buttons is currently on, and plays through the speakers (Ringer Mode) just fine, but doesn't actually go from Headphone to Ringer.
  • Headphone jack has been cleaned out with a Q-tip with barely any cotton on the end (dry), spin it, in and out (no innuendos intended), the whole 9 yards.
  • I have already tried re-seating the headphone jack cable that plugs onto the logic board, and then resetting the phone, but still jumps straight to Headphone mode. Volume buttons and mute switch do work.
  • Issue started happening ever since I finished up the replacements on my phone.
  • While the phone is on and I have music playing, if I unplug the headphone jack cable, music will start playing from speakers, thus in ringer mode. The second I plug the cable back in, it goes back into Headphone mode even without headphones plugged in.

So I was just wondering if there are any other steps I can try to either resolve the issue or to start narrowing down what the exact issue is.

I had the exact problem after replacing the headphone jack. sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't, i got a Q-tip and cleaned it on the inside which usually made it recognize there is no headphones plugged in, from there I plugged in and took out and it worked as normal

I do appreciate the quick response, but I had already mentioned that that was one of the steps I already did.

oh yeah sorry, i don't know how i missed that. are you getting right to the bottom?

Yes, got it all the way in, and couldn't go further.

To be honest I would try plugging your iPhone into iTunes and doing a restore to see if a difference occurs. A couple of quick fixes you could try is to hard reset the phone by holding the Sleep/ Wake button and Home button together and then the screen goes black, once you see the apple logo let off and wait for the phone to boot. second thing you could try if you really know what your doing you could take off the back unplug the battery, wait a while and plug it back in and see what happens. If none of the above fixes work then i would back up your data and do an iTunes restore. Good Luck.
