Why does my screen flash solid colors then displays a gray screen?

Looks like flashes of the desktop wallpaper behind the color flashes (full red screen then full blue screen, other colors, thru to a solid gray).

This began when I attempted to use my daughter's usb "internet stick", which is from a company in Mexico called telcel. The stick is from Huawei Mobile Connect, model E160 HSDPA. FCC ID: QISE160, CEO 682.

I'd love to be using my laptop again and look forward to any repair suggestions.

Susan

Thank you for your reply, bad news that it is. Now shoot me.

Please tell me my stuff is still in there and re-triveable. Seriously. I went to Cambodia and stuff. And some other stuff I'd rather not lose.

That said, to the rt of the screen is a topic, "Which Philips screws on left edge of keyboard area?

In step 28 of the iBook g4 Logic Board Replacement guide, the...

", which tells me the logic board can be replaced. This would be the perfect time to upgrade my RAM and install OSX 5.6.whatever. Yes? I have not researched the cost of these things.

OTOH, what's the chance there is an interupt by the i-stick? Was it simply coincidence that the color thing happened at the moment the stick was inserted? Might that be reversible? Oh! And does the sequence of the colors indicate a specific problem (similar to the beeps with a pc)?

Thanks again.

Good News. She's fixed. My son looked it up online & called from Korea. Following his instructions, I held down ctrl/apple/r/p during the initial boot from off and whala... I'm typing this on it now. So, it was something to do with a power source being totally depleted or something. This very cool geek guy I met (who writes for Mac OS) explained it to me. Except the part where the exclamation/1 key doesn't work everything seems to be fine. I can live with that for now. Yay (exclamation point). I do need to upgrade to 10.4, which might be a problem to find. Otherwise, thanks everyone for your advice.

Hi Susan

I can't make complete sense out of your last post. The cost of replacing the LB in an iBook G4 is probably more than the computer is worth.

It could easily be coincidence that the failure happened when you plugged in that stick. The way to tell is to try booting your computer to something else, like the system CD that came with it (hold down the C key while booting after you insert the disk), or an external hard drive with a compatible system; if the colors happen there too, then it's not your installed system that's the problem.

However, even if the LB is failing, your data is probably OK. One way to recover your stuff is to see if your computer will boot into Firewire Target Mode (hold down T key while booting) and connecting it to another Mac to copy the data off. If that won't work, the drive can be removed, and connected via something like this:

http://eshop.macsales.com/search/univers...

to another Mac to recover your data.

In a case where you risk important data, you might be well-served to contact a knowledgeable Mac consultant to help you. And when you do get this fixed, or get a new computer, make sure you stick to a good backup plan!

I'm sorry to say it, but that's most likely a logic board problem. I would remove the extended memory, Airport, and battery to rule those items out, and then reset the PRAM and PMU, and who knows, you might have some luck. But historically as far as I've ever read/experienced, the flashing colors generally are a pretty surefire indicator of logic board failure.

I had this problem with strange colored screens. It is due to the video card developing a bad connection. You need to get the whole logic board resoldered. I discovered this by a lot of searching online to diagnose the problem. Some people tried to fix the problem themselves which is not for tech challenged folks- it is really better to get a professional to do it. There is a company that can do this which I found : http://superiorreball.com/

They fixed my iBook and now it is working again. Really inexpensive too. Just want to add that given the cost of replacing a whole motherboard you are at the point where you might as well buy a new mac. This solution is of course not 100% guaranteed to work. Given the choice of ditching a machine that I added a DC inboard to, upgraded to Leopard and bought a brand new power supply and battery for - it seemed I had nothing to lose ( if the machine was a goner) by getting the logic board repaired. I am not a engineer so I was happy to find a solution - which is a fault documented by Apple for the g3/g4 iBooks.

Warning: don't do business with "Superior Reball and Rework". I sent 12 iBooks\PowerBooks logic boards to them for repair 2 years ago and never seen the boards since. Dozens emails sent with no result. I have open a complain at Better Business Bureau about this case. Anyway, you'll be warned !!!

WOW!!!! Thanx for the heads up Lemerise. That's a big hit you took there. I hope other people read your post.

Thanks Majesty. Yes many friends and customers were waiting for their working laptop but I was helpless. I called many times Superior for and update and they kept telling me that my ordrer would be shipped soon but never shipped it. A real nightmare...had to find logic boards elsewhere WTF !!!

Hey! I've found that the GPU itself coming loose and needing a reball (or heat gun or teacup lights?) to reflow the BGA underneath the chip is more of a G3 problem. I haven't seen many, or any of the G4's with the GPU problem. Hopefully that reset that you did did the trick. However, if it's hardware, it seems to usually be a different chip on the G4's that has an unsoldered pin. What I had happen on my G4 14'' 1.33ghz was this problem, and, like the G3 GPU problem that worked when I held down on the chip when I would hold down towards the "power pins" end of this chip the computer would work, when I didn't sometimes it would work for a minute and give the flashing colors and eventually a grey screen, or wouldn't boot at all and the fan would spin. Here are the links:

What sounds more like this problem, the G4 Vreg chip problem (affects video like mentioned above):

http://www.pcxmedics.com/blog/diy/iBook-... (don't let the title fool you, this is for a g4, not a g3 at all)

And for completeness's sake, the G3 GPU problem:

im not sure if you still want an answer but i have had this problem twice the first time the power supply chip for the gpu (i believe that is what it is) had become unsoldered if you search on google for iBook g4 schim it will show you how to fix this problem without any soldering but it doessnt always work. the second time this happened was about a month ago my iBook fell of my desk when the power cord got tangeled with my backpack, i guess there is a point to those magsafe adapters. anyway i had just bought a 20 inch samsung display for my iMac i tried it in my iBook and it works like normal but if you do this you need to install screen spanning docter (just google it) to get full resolution. so i took my iBook apart for the hundredth time and removed the whole screen (i had done it before with a iBook g3) but i had to take the airport antenna from the screen and leave them to go out where the rest of the cables would go but it works great as a desktop now. reply if you want instructions on how to reove the screen or to fix the power supply chip

This happened to my son's G4 iBook today. I found this thread helpful.

We couldn't get it to stop flashing colors, so we removed the battery, unplugged it, and left it off for an hour while we read what to do. I wasn't hopeful when I saw it could be the graphics card or logic board.

Anyway, we restarted without the battery, and reset pram (see above: reboot holding down apple/option/p/r until you hear the startup sound again.)

Everything works perfectly now! Even with the battery back in. Thanks!

The flashing colors are a definite sign of a failing logic board, so even if you've managed to get it going temporarily, it's probably going to fail permanently soon, so you might want to think about backing up your data and replacing the computer.
