Home button will not respond

I press the home button, but it makes a sound but nothing happens. I tried putting a lot of pressure on it, nothing. I've opened and closed the 3DS multiple times, made sure that it wasn't one app that had this problem, and I don't want to spend money to fix it. Is there any way I can fix this problem?
