compatibility issue with dock only good with classic and not 5th gen

So i recently bought a new boom box, sharp gm x10. I find out that the stereo is not compatible with 5th gen ipod video, however it is compatible with 6th gen (classic). What gives? Is it a hardware thing or a software thing? What can i do to make it work?
